i want to build a driveable truck, one that gets decent gas millage on the highway but has some power left to tear up some mud now and then...i don't want a rock crawler or anything just don't want to be starved for power on the low end. probably like to go with tires around 31" on a 302V8. is there any tranny gearing combination out there that could acheive this result.

thanks guys

Change your gearing to 4:11 or 4:56's. What tranny do you have? If it an automatic, look at putting a shift kit in it and a HD torque convertor in it. If it is a C-6, I would seriously look into rebuilding it with HD clutch plates and the above items. Add a tranny cooler to prolong the life of your tranny. As for the engine, the 302 has a lot of potential, but look into intake manifold upgrade, cam upgrade, how much $$$ do you want to dump into it and go from there.

There are soooo many options available to you and your EB....

It is going to boil down to you, your driving habits, the terrain you want to wheel in, your mechanical ability, and how much cash you want to spend.

You don't mention what year your Bronco is, or what t case /trans you presently have. Also 2 or 4 bbl carb or injection...

Your truck probably has 3.50 rear/ 3.54 front gears in it now. If you have a

t- handle t/case, you have 2.46:1 low range, J-handle is 2.34:1 for low.

31" tires with stock trans and t case should get you just about anywhere you have the ground clearance to go. Especially if you use low range.

its a 69 with a three on the tree. i'm not looking to dump tons of money in it right away and i don't need a serious off roading machine, i'm more concerned about making it dependable and something i could afford to drive every day. also the motor has recently been rebuilt so i don't plan on doing any internal changes to that.

thanks for the imput

First off, if you want decent gas mileage, you arent going to get it. I had a carb set up and my best day was 12-14 mpg. I have the EFI now and still on the highway, my best is in the neighborhood of 16-18 mpg. A 302/5.0 is not fuel efficient. That is one of the consequences that we EB lovers have to suffer through. Secondly, if you dont want to touch the engine because of a recent rebuild, then you need to swap out gears in the axels. For that you are looking in the range of $3000 for someone else to do it. That would also include having a locker installed in both ends. The big problem you are going to run into if you are doing mud running is that you probably have a D30 up front and in the mud you will break it sooner or later. So that brings up the issue of a stronger front axel. Go spend the money on a Dana 44 for the front end. Basically, it snowballs from here because once you get the stronger front end you will have to upgrade the rear because you probably have the small bearing rear end with 28 spline axels and will need to do something about that.

All in all, your axel set up is probably not ideal for mud. You have the small bearing 9" rear end and the smaller and much weaker D30 front end. Save up some money and buy a big bearing 9" with 4:11 gears and get a D44 for the front end and put 4:10 in that. You should also think about doing lockers in either end or both because you dont want to spend the money later down the road to set up either pumpkin again if you do decide to put a locker in. All in all, if you have about 3 grand laying around do the axels first and right because if you dont, you will spend the money fixing and replacing parts for the weaker parts that you currently have.

As far as the tranny goes, put a floor shifter in. I would recommend against a hurst speed shifter because they tend to get stuck. Personal experience there with my first EB. Stick with the 3-speed because you can't jam gears in a 4 speed like you can with the 3.

With 31 10.5 15 M/T tires in my 69 with a 4 bbl 5.0 roller cam, 3 spd manual and 3.50/3.54 gearing, I was getting 18-22 mpg on the highway at 60 mph.

If you switch to a floor shifter, the Hurst (Early Bronco specific) Duff, or Graveyard shifters are the EXACT same parts, with different shifter handles...

I have never had a problem with my Hurst or Duff (Hurst built) shifters.

I too would recommend swapping to a D44 front diff for durability, but I know several racers that use the D30 because it weighs about 100-150 lbs less than the 44.

With the 3 speed trans, you will either sacrifice fuel mileage and highway speeds with a re gear to lower gears, or sacrifice low end grunt to keep your fuel mileage at highway speeds....

IN MY OPINION...

You should save up your $$$, find a 5 speed trans swap that you like (overdrive is your friend!!) then regear your diffs.

Your rear diff will be fine for the mild off-road use you say you will use it for. (but plan for a future up grade anyways... you will eventually go to 33's... we all do!!!)

Any ( I think all) of the Bronco vendors sell 5 speeds and adaptor kits.

You can also check out advance adapters website.

To the best of my knowledge there are no direct bolt in 5 speeds for the EB.
