So i put the used NP208 case i bought in, drove maybe a 1/4 mile and a grindin noise came from under the truck  . I was wondering if bad hubs could make the case grind if they were worn and not locking right? Im lost and ****** off now and need some help.

If you don't think the chain or gears are broken by looking at the fluid for shavings or other scrap metal.

They have fork pads that can wear down not letting it hold in gear tightly. Does tinkering with the lever do anything for the grinding/whining you hear?

They have a planetary gears that can get sticky too if they set a long time on their side or upside down or have been run hot and low on fluid.

I have never heard of anyone attempting this but you could try draining the of fluid in it and fill it up with an anti-seize lubricant like PB Blaster and let it set a day or two (don't run it like that) then drain it out and refill it with the proper ATF. I do not know if this would work or not, it might make it leak like a stuck pig. It would only be something to try if it were a last resort to removing it and rebuilding it.

Depending on where the noise actually came our hubs may be the problem. Jack the front end off the ground one side at a time, use a jack stand for stability and engage the hubs. Then try turning the front drive shaft by hand and see if the free wheel moves. If that one moves lower it back on the ground and jack up the other side and do the same. If the move freely then your hubs are engaging and we are back to the transfer case. Disengage the hubs and put both front wheels on the ground and try turning the drive shaft by hand with the transfer case in 2WD, It should turn freely. You could drain the transfer case and use a small magnetic tool retriever to put inside and see if you come out with any metal shavings.

Good luck,

:)>-

No it doesnt do anything to wiggle the shifter, it works when it wants too. I think ill check the fluid level and hubs. If there bad i was wondering if the warm premiums are worth the extra money over the standards?

Oh ok, cool, I like manual hubs alot more, more dependable....um good after market hubs would probably Warn or super winch. I have superwinch manual locker hubs and they are fine. As far as Im concerned Warn makes one of the best hubs you could buy.
