alright so a while back i used my bronco to tow a 17foot winner ski boat about 100 miles round trip maybe. it was a relatively hot day (about 90). the trip down was fine but on the way back was ****. i got back to the truck and the battery was dead so i got a jump which got me rolling again, on my way back into town the electronics started failing and finally everything went out except for the engine, basically to make a long story short, by the time i rolled it into my repair shop lot the alternator was dead and my tranny had overheated and the trans fluid had spilled out along the way....

NOW, after that horror story... i had the alternator replaced and a few other things checked out and it all seemed to be fine, the mechanic did a minor trans tune up and everything checked out fine. I have not used it to tow since then.

As of right now tho, it is a 1992 Eddie Bauer with a strong 302 (only 80,000 original miles) everything seems to be in real good condition right now, i have changed it a little bit since that incident as i now have a 3 inch body lift and 33" bfg muds on 15x10's, and a brush guard that adds maybe 50lbs.

basically i want to tow with it again and want to know things i should do to prevent this from happening again. i did learn that i need to keep it out of overdrive at all times when towing (which i did NOT do that time) the boat and trailor combined weigh around 2800-3000lbs, safe overestimate. ive been looking for weight ratings and combined ratings and what not, but cant quite find a definitive answer, so i need to call on the tech guys out here to give me some advice...

if yall need any more info let me know, and thanks a lot!!

OK, First as you now know do not use OD when towing.

It sounds like you need to check the trailer wiring and hook up on the truck to be sure they are not crossed or shorting. Also be sure to check your grounds. Last you need to install a trany cooler, don't relay on the one in the rad.

I have a 90 with a 351 and E4OD trany and have been towing my race car and other cars on a 16' open trailer with out any real problems, only problem is the Beast grunts and groans when towing

A few weeks ago me and my freind where fixing a 20 foot flat bed pental hitch trailer after putting new floors on we put my bronco on the trailer and went for a drive he has a 96 XLT bronco with a 351 and E4OD just like mine only diff is a one ton rear end it pulled the trailer and the truck fine even on the high way doing about 85mph Broncos can and will pull just about anything as long as the hitch is up to the task

Damn, my truck can barely does 85 without a trailer, because of the low gears. The 96 must of been slightly built. huh.?

Barely 85.... noway I've done well over 100 with my 84 302 bored 30 over a slight tow cam ,t-18 and 33's
Same here, now that i have 31"x10.50's i really don't go that fast but my '96 XL 302CID can run with the best of them up at 95 and 100. 142,350 miles and still runs like a scalded dog!
