So this guy was actually asking whether he should get the V6 or V8 Explorer. Here are a couple of comments that made it a necessity to reply:

1) unless you tow something huge all the time, why go with a 4.6 v8 that eats more gas? if you are looking for one to run around the city mostly, driving to workand store etc etc...i would go with the 4.0 v6. i can still tow but i dont need it but once or twice a year. i get 17.5 mpg in the city, 21-22 on the highway. i noticed a jump wihen i ignored the factory recommended tire pressures and went with 38 on all 4 fours (they recommend 35 in front and 38 in back). i was getting 15 if i was lucky in the city.

people have different needs. you have to base your desires on your particular needs. if you are like me and just like a big suv to drive around town, go with the 4.0 v6 2wd. no need for all the extras and a bigger engine. it will just need more gas.

2) as i said, its a matter of choice and what you want it for. i guess you have a point and go with the V8 4.6 if you regularly pull a yacht, need to chase after cars over a 100 mph or just like to burn more gas...yes, though its not much of a difference, 2 mpg difference in my case would be (100 gallons per month, 1200 per year)....2400 less miles a year, or 150 more gallons ($350-$450). my needs are just to have a nice size SUV instead of a foreign compact car. I rarely pull anything and i live in low flat area. So, for all you V8 lovers, good for you, but some of us dont need all that power to get around town. (your nuts if you think theres no difference in mpg between a V6 and a V8).....

AND MY RESPONSE:

If you rarely pull anything and live in a low flat area then don't even crowd the roads with another SUV. Just like a 2wd truck a 2wd SUV with a V6 is as useless as a fart in a mitten. I know that is going to **** you guys off, but I mean come on. If you lower an SUV and are pimping around with a V6 that is fine. I understand. It's all about the looks. But, if you are going to use an S-"Utility"-V for its intended purpose then get a V8. I am trying to convince myself that I didn't just buy a freakin station wagon. Should I be heading to the nearest decal maker and getting some wood grain to put on the side of this thing. **** no. The Explorer was created to phase out the Bronco, which if I remember correctly never came in a 2wd V6 model and there was a reason. Soccer moms didn't drive it.

IF the Bronco did ever come in a 2wd V6 please don't tell me I don't want to know. It would crush me. Unless it is a 60's model and then I would be ok with that.

No fears, Ford did have the decency to change the name to Expedition before they made a :-& two wheel drive version. Hopefully they won't discrace the Bronco name by putting it on the front wheel drive concept thing.

Thats pretty funny, way to hold on to your manhood. LOL I have a confession. Ever since I bought my first Bronco I have had dreams of making one 2 wheel drive. And lowering it, hold on hear me out.... I also like the newer Lightnings, but I kind of like my vehicles to be different. My dream was to take a 92 and up style 5.8 Bronco, and going 2 wheel drive and lowering it, installing a kickass suspension and stroking the 5.8 to a 408 or something and putting on a Kenne Bell Supercharger. I think roaming the streets in a Lightning inspired Bronco would be a ton 'o fun with the roof off. You are entitled to your opinion, but thats what I would like to do. I also want my current Bronco for offroading with another 6 inches of lift and 38's and I want both of them painted the same, to be identical except the tires and lift.

Somewhere, I read a writeup with some photos of a Bronco/Lightning conversion very similar to what you describe. If I can find it again I will send you the link. Not really my cup of tea, but it was a cool project.

That would be cool. My first plan was all of this in one truck, my wheeler/street racer. Just to impractical wouldnt be near as good offroad as I want nor on the street so if it happens, will have to be two trucks. Heres a pic of a 2 wheel drive Bronco. Its a 78, I want a newer one. Must be done up like a lightning though, no **** mobiles here.

Here is the link to the Lightning Bronco I mentioned. It has a few cool photos of the truck sitting in a parking lot. I couldn't find the pictures of the front suspension swap, but I will keep looking.

*shakes head* Explorer people.... I would never trade my bronco for one of those regardless. I love my broncos too much. The only thing I would consider is one of those 4 door bronco conversions. The ultimate family vehicle! And don't bash stations wagons! :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> Do you have any idea how much hay you can put in the back of one of them? More than you'd think! But I like having 4x4 too. And I agree that if you don't do anything, there is no point having an SUV. And if you do have one, gas milage should be low on the list of concerns! You don't really buy one for the MPG. I get a kick out of the soccer moms that drive their 'burbans and such thinking they own the road. I bet none of them would even know how to take the damn thing off road even down a dirt road.

Yardape, I think that would be pretty cool to have 4wd and 2wd twins. I have always a Bronco and a Bronco II to be indentical.... I think that would be fun.

Even though some of you guys don't think 2wd truck have a place, a few friends of my mine have 60's trucks that are 2wd... my b/f has a 3/4 ton 63 chevy step side that he is redoing... And although they are all chevys, I can appreciate the work they are doing to make them into weekend drivers to cruise around in..

Yeah good thing too. A factory 2wd Bronco would have been a bit of a joke. What's the point of a Bronco if it's not 4wd?

Although I am not knocking the 2wd Bronco Lightning thing. That is aftermarket and cool :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

I agree, I think the 2wd bronco thing is kind of cool, but I would try to go a little more pro-street. but I will never give up my 4x4.

BTW Roadkill first post I've seen with the new look, looks good.

Thats exactly what I had in mind, save for a few hundred more horsepower but thats cool. Picture that with no roof, smokin the tires. Blower wailing away.

I can understand a 4x2 pickup because it is still usefull you can carry things in it,but a 4x2 suv.I never understood the 4x2 blazer or ramcharger you may as well have a car plus they look funny being so low.If I see a 4x2 ramcharger it is usually driven by an oldman and has hubcaps and skinny whitewalls on it.It's a different thing to see like a prostreet 4X2 or even the lightning prototype bronco which I came across awhile back and thought was pretty cool.Another thing I think is weird is a lowered hummer or blazer it kind of defeats the purpose of a 4x4.

I love early model pro-street lowered Fords and Chevys. An old effie choppin weeds with a tubbed out rear-end and huge block in the hole is beautiful. There is an awesome F-100 event every year in Pigeon Forge,TN every year that I have yet to have th opportunity to go to, but I have seen pictures and it looks great. As far as a dropped lightning clipped Bronco. Sounds amazing. Couldn't you more or less find a lightning chassis and slide a Bronco body on it with some modifications. I would love to see that pulling a monster with the same paintjob on a trailer. I am getting a semi just thinking about it. Sorry. Too much information.

The F150 frame would have to be cut in the middle and shortened. Plus transplanting the body would be a major undertaking in the average guys driveway. The guy up above just swapped the drivetrain and suspension over. To me, that sounds a lot easier. Definately more do-able if it were in my driveway. I don't think I have to worry about that kind of thing any time soon though. I have the most understanding wife on the planet, but even she has her limits. :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />
