lmb,Imagine one circle inside of another. The distance around the inside circle is shorter than the distance around the outside circle. So now imagine that one makes a turn with his bronco. The tires on the inside of the turn will go a shorter distance than the tires on the outside of the turn, and since they will get to the end of the turn at the same time, the outside tire has to turn faster, or the inside tire has to turn slower, or both. An open rear, and a limited slip rear allows them to spin at different speeds, and both tires stay in contact with the road.
On the other hand, if one has a set of lockers, and they are engaged, the left and right axles are rigidly locked together, and both tires WILL spin at the same rate. Something will have to give when one makes a turn, and what gives is the tires slipping on the pavement. This gives excessive wear to the tires. On dry road the chirping sound is like when one slams on his brakes and skids, but just in short little hops. On wet pavement, it is possible that BOTH tires will give a little bit, and one can find himself sliding all over the road, cause every time he makes a turn, he is in a skid.
Here is a thread on the different types of lockers.
