Temperature Sensor/ Gauge

I am new to the bronco scene and recently purchased a 72. I have two immediate problems to deal with. One the brake lights dont work, but I think that is just old/faulty wiring in the back. Right now my concern is the temperature Gauge. I am unhooked the gauge from the sensor and grounded that wire to the engine frame. I looked at the gauge on the inside and it went to the HOT side. So I am assuming the gauge is good and the sensor is bad. IS that the right assumption. So if I buy a new sensor then I should be up and running? Any guidance to this newbie would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Karl, welcome..!!

The '72 has a brake light switch up behind the pedal arm...they can get dirty., or freeze up., or even a wire off.

You're right on the sender.! Sometimes you can clean them with a wire wheel..., then re-install but don't use teflon tape. Best bare metal to bare metal. Check the threads in the hole..., they may need cleaning.(it's a pipe fit.)

Thanks Bully Bob. Will check that out in the morning. The sensor also had teflon tap wrapped around it.

The gauge needs the metal to metal contact to make a good ground connection. As Bully Bob said, the threads are designed to seal an don't require tape. The tape will prevent getting a good ground connection.
