Just bought a 1993 Bronco XLT and the tailgate window won't go down. The guy I bought it from told me that he could get it to go down by doing something with the wires but I dont know. When I push the button I get nothing(no sound) The key wont do it either. Does anyone have any suggestions on troubleshooting?

lol....if u do a poll on rear windows that worked...about 2/3 out there are broken. the problem is the motor for the rear window is mounted in **** a way that when it rains it gets in back tail gate and on to motor(one of 2 design flaws on our babys:( ....if u want to try and fix it. take the inside of tailgate apart. u will see that after u take off the metal panel that the middle has the motor mounted on the back of that. disconnect the plug to the motor hook up a volt meter to plug to the wire. and turn on truck and flip window switch...see if that sends power back to the motor. if the volt meter moves then its the motor. if its still dead. try the key in back. if that works switch is dead. and if all elce fails check fuse and wires to make sure non are loose...just remember when it rains try not to use window.

To add just a little,

there is a safety switch in the left side tailgate latch that often becomes flaky. try pushing in on the left side of the tailgate as you try the key, and as someone else trys the dash switch. BTW... the key must be in the ON position to use the dash switch.

Areas that often go bad are..

as the wire flexes by the left side of the tailgate

also in some, I'm not sure if all, there is a connector behind the left taillight that sometimes gets corroded.

IF you need more info... wireing diagrams and such, let us know.

There are numerous things that can make the tail gate motor fail to operate. A couple of them already mentioned and it could be any connector in the path from the tailgate to the dash. There are two fuses involved, one for the driver switch and one for the tail gate key switch. The ground connection for both switches is via the dash switch, see attached diagram.

A quick check can decide between the electrical path and the motor as the failure. Open the access panel and find the motor leads along the bottom of the gate (red and Yellow). Using jumpers, alternately connect the leads directly to a battery + and - . Switching the leads changes the direction of the motor.

Good luck,

:)>-
