ok so i cut the wires and connected voltage in bothe directions across the motor... so i can hear the motor struggling in both up and down directions, but the window doesnt budge. I used some elbow grease and managed to budge the window down an inch and then i put it back up after i was done screwing around for the night. The big semicircle gears are rusted a little and have almost no lubrication.. i will go swipe some lithium greese this weekend and **** them up but im wondering if maybe the gears inside the motor are stripped. I have an identical motor that i snatched from the junk yard last weekend and the teeth that are exposed look fine.

OK SO.. how the **** do i replace the motor? true -there are only three small bolts holding the motor, but its a bitch to reach while ur inside the care and even if i am able to het the old motor out, i dont think i will be able to get the new motor in. is there any way to put the motor in from the outside of the truck? andi dont meant cutting a hole in the tale gate with snips. I think the tail gate may be one big piece of sheet metal and there may not be any other way to get to the motor other than from the inside... ok like i said. I can probably get the old motor out but i have a feeling i will not be able to get the new one in... not enough space and i gotta worry about lining up the teeth..maybey lubing the gears is all i need.. hmm anyone know about changeing that motor out easily? can it be done from outside the truck?

It's not that hard to change the motor, but it must be done from inside the tailgate. Your gear is prolly stripped, so you can either use the replacement motor or just swap the gear. There is some good tech info in the How-To & Tech Articles section, go to Miesk5 Homepage and look for "Body' then "Tailgate". Be sure to tie the two regulator arms together so they don't fall down when you pull the motor out. Lubing the two arms and gears is a good idea as well as the side runs. The tailgate is one piece of metal with the outer skin spotwelded to the shell. The PO of my 86 did cut an access hole in the outside of the tailgate to work on the motor, then covered it with a flat plate and some screws. But it rusted out so bad that the whole thing fell off when I removed the hardtop with the glass up. JSM84

I've only done one of these, but be very careful of the two arms that raise and lower the window. when you unhook these, they are spring loaded, and will slam down and cut you up if your arms are in the tailgate ( which they are as you pull the linkage apart). Just make sure you have ahold on one of the arms as you release it. My experience was on an 86, but I think they are all basically the same.

Hm my arms must be stuck because I took out my motor and didnt tie up anything. My motor did the same thing and when I got it out and took the cover off the gears on the inside were in pieces. Should i zip tie these arms up anyways. Sorry not trying to steal your post.

I am also trying to get my tailgate window to work. In the process of trying to gt the window down to fix the problem I found why window would not go down. It was because the plastic bushings that travel in the channel bolted to the window were stuck to the regulator arms. They pop on a ball joint on the end of the regulator arms and need to swivel as the window goes down. One was really stiff the other didn't move until I used a channel lock on it. A little wd-40 and some elbow grease and they freed right up. This may also be a fix to your problem. Now if I could only get to the bottom of my problem...

i think u are exactly right mel... i pulled the motor out and it works fine.. so does the new one that i got at a junkyard. the motors are fine.. i greased the regulater (i assume thats the big twin metals gears assembly) and got the motor to budge the window a little, but the metal regulator arms are rusted bad.. even the gears.. the grease helped free it up a little but i think i should have wd40d the rust first.. the motor still wont move the window so i think i have no choice but to replace the whole regulator assembly. I wish i had wd40'd everyhitng first becuase now that everyhitng has grease i dont think the wd40 will cut through.

i must now go in search of the metal assembly that i think is called the regulator.. damn.. i wonder if th local parts stores would have those.
