just picked up my 79 bronco today and the steering pretty bad. the previous owner put on a new power steering pump and he said he had the problem ever since. it is very responsive and tight when turned to the left and very loose and takes almost half a turn of the wheel to move to the right. what should i check for? thanks in advance

The problem is most likely in the steering gearbox. It's $100 to $150 for a rebuilt one. Make sure it has a lifetime warranty if you plan to keep the truck you may be replacing it in a few year. To check it open the hood and grab the steering shaft from the steering column to the gear box and turn it back and forth. You should be able to see what's not moving like it should.

check for worn loose tie rods, bent links, bushings can make a world of difference too especially trac bar, and if its lifted see if has had the geometry corrected (pitman drop, trac drop/ adjustable links) the steering shaft can also wear and new rag joints can help. make sure the steering box is tight to the frame. you can take play out of it too but do it last and dont adjust too much or it will have too much preload and will wear even faster and **** return to center. agr is probably the best place to get a new steering box and i think they even change ratios for larger tires. hope this can help my 79 had terrible steering when i brought it home and the trac bar bushings helped more than i could ever imagine.
