I have recently re-purchased a '69 Bronco. There seems to be an issue when I am driving and have to veer to the left, say in a left hand curve. There is a mild 'pop' followed by a minor lurch to the left. Very strange. I think the gear box was changed several years ago.

Anyone have any ideas as to the root cause of my steering issue?

Not enough info.... P/s or manual ? Lifted ?

Anyway, if manual...the "bell/joint" on the box could be faulty. It could be in the box. Could be any number of connections.

P/S...could be rag or U-joint on shaft.

Jack it up on stands & get under there & look...! ... get a helper to turn, twist & push things 'til you find it.

Bad steering can be deadly.

Yea, be carefull with steering and brakes. My '69 came with some really funky steering. You turn the wheel and there was a 1/2 second delay before anythign happened. Also, jamming on the brakes would cause it to steer (not brake) in one direction.

After a month of this (I just assumed this is how old broncos are), I took a good look at the steering box. It wasn't even bolted to the frame. Every time I turned the wheel, the box would slide over until it couldn't go any further, then the wheels would turn. Strangely, I just got used to that lag and could maneurver pretty well.

The first thing I'd to is to make sure all the steering linkage is connected and that there's no play in any of the joints. After that, I'd look at the box itself.

:)) We've all been there!!

First as we've all stated in past e-mails... Have someone turn the steering back and forth quickly with engine off and tires on the ground. Watch the steering shaft and pitman arm, do they move at the same time? if not could be the box. Now look at the tie-rods and trac bar bushings. Trac bar bushings fail all the time and allows the front end to move all over when bad.

Jack up a wheel, one hand on top, another on bottom and see if you can wobble the tire. If it does, see if its the ball joints or wheel bearings.
