Has anyone here ever put a spool in the front axle. I have heard mixed emotions about it. One is that when you do it and lock your hubs, your front steering becomes really hard to turn. I was thinking the spool because it would be nice to have the front end locked, but I dont know if its worth all of the troble. Has anyone done this, or know someone that has? I was just wondering how you felt about it. Thanks!

I wouldnt put a spool in the front soemthing has to give be it the differential / limited slip or axles something is going too . If you were in sand all the time or it was a special purpose toy go for it but a daily driver no way . Especially if you drive it in the winter . I wouldnt even put a limited slip in the front of mine again if I had it to do all over sure the traction is great dont get stuck in the snow but the damn thing jerks all over the road as soon as you get into a little ice makes for a very nerve racking white knuckle commute to work every morning . If you had one of the electric / mechanical / vacuum operated lockers that when disenguaged it works as a normal diff I would say that woudl be your best bet but the cost is way up there . There,s my 2 cents :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

I've driven a spooled front axle and on dirt or sand it's not bad, as the tires can slip. If I had to make a tight turn on the trail, it's easier to unlock one hub, then make the turn, and re-lock the hub. The spool WILL be harder on axleshafts and u-joints, so carrying spares is a must. I bought some chromoly shafts for my 78 (see thread in 78/79 support forum), as I keep breaking the stock parts even with an open front axle. JSM84

I installed a spool after I toasted a truetrac. I would suggest against it. Even if you run one hub unlocked the truck pulls really hard to one side while driving. The truck is almost impossible to drive while in the snow on the street.
