im looking to get rid of all the rust on the under carrage of my bronco. things will include leaf springs, parts of the frame, blots and screws, etc... any suggestions on any ways do do this and products to use that could take a day or two? im trying to do this the simple way where all i have to do is put the bronco on a lift or just crawl under the bronco and do it. but that may not be the case as this job may be tougher than i think and take time. any ideas will be greatfull. thx in advance.

A lot depends on how bad it is. Generally it can be done by wire brushing with a drill, and lightly grinding the heavy stuff off the frame with grinder. I use POR15 to paint it. The company guarantees that it will stop rust if applied as suggested: 1. degrease any area that needs it, 2. spray with Metal ready 3. Paint with POR15. I have been using it for over 5 years on the recommendation of a friend that is a fleet mechanic. According to him, in all the years he has been using it he has never had to go back and do it over. On some trucks I have seen him do the entire frame and dump body. If exposed to sun light then you need to top coat it. The product is expensive but well worth it. One caution, wear protective clothing like a painting suit. If you get it on you and don't get it off before it starts to cure, you wear it until it wear off your skin, I know this from personal experience and there is a warning on the can  .

There are other products also, the most popular alternative is Rust Bullet but I have no experience with it. Perhaps someone with some extended experience with it can comment.

Good luck,

:)>-

I agree, use POR-15. I use it all the time on various projects and it works great and last forever. I did a car frame about 10 years ago and it is still holding up just fine.

POR-15 is designed to go over rust but you need to make sure you get all of the large pieces of rusty scale off and then just use a stiff wire brush, either by hand or on a drill, to remove the other rust and dirt. You do not have to go down to bare metal.

Once the area has been prepared put on your protective clothing (long sleeve shirt - I use a Tyvek painters jump suit to protect my whole body, rubber gloves, face shield since you will be laying under the car) and paint away!

Make sure you follow the instructions on the can! Do not paint directly out of the can since the paint can get contaminated but rusty particles and dry up into clumps. Make sure that you clean the rim of the can before you put the lid back on because if there is any paint left on the rim and you put the lid back on the paint will dry the lid to the can and you will never get it back open, trust me :-"

They suggest putting a layer of wax paper between the lid and can. If there is any paint, you'll have to cut it open or blast :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />
