rearend change

I need help on changing the rear gears. step by step from jacking it up and changing out the third member. Thanks for any advice

This is not the place for a detailed proceedure like that. It would probably take atlest an hour to type it in. You need to get a shop manual. Taking it apart won't be so much, but a proper adjustment proceedure without missing a step would be a real chore. You may want to consider having someone either help or do it for you. If it is not adjusted properly it will just tear up in no time at all. that being said, here is a site that sells gears and believes you can do it if you are mechanically inclined. They claim they will give technical help even if you didn't buy the gears from them.

If your're just talking about the third member thats easy!Disconnect the rear driveshaft.(make sure you put some tape or sumpin over your u-joint bearing endcaps,so they dont fall off),pull the rear wheels,take off the four axle retaining plate nuts and bolts,slide your axles out,loosen all the nuts and bolts from around your pumkin.(make sure you have a drip pan for the gear oil,and that sucker is heavier than it looks so be ready with help and a jack,to keep it from falling.You may have to get something to break the seal free,after 30 years some of them are glued tight.Its not very hard,I've done it about eight times,and I'm no mechanic.

Thats just taking out the third member,that doesnt require setting anything up,but like Seabronc was saying,to assemble a third member,thats a nother story,I dont assemle them,but if you buy one assembled already,its prety simple for the average guy to swap one out.
