Ok I know that I have a great loss of power due to the size tires i run. 35x12.50. And I know that a gear swap is a good step in the right direction.

But I wanna know what axle I have up front If it is a dana 50 or what? Can anyone tell me what front end i have or how to go about finding out.

Are there any good forums here or any othre site not "fullsizebronco" already been there. that might show good pics and a break down of what has to be done.

I know that the rear is going to be pretty easy and that front is not going to be so easy. But im comfortable doing the back and takeing the front carrier out since im pretty sure it has to be changed. "I think" Hence the reason I wanna know what front end I have...

Im new here so if I seem a little on the not so bright side well you might be right. Or I might just want to know everyones input.

I posted a thread in the newbie section so that everyone would know what type of truck engine i have...

My name is Jake.

Any help is appereciated

seems like we've got a few things in common my names also Jake, i'm also thinking about the gear swap because of my oversized tires but unlike you i'm not even sure what rear end i have let alone front end. would i have to change the front if i did the rear? i'm also thinking about putting a posi in the rear. would that effect the gear swap at all? I'm also new to bronco's and mechanics in general and i bought this truck as a "project truck" so i like to try to do as much as i can myself but i think i might need a profesional on this one.

The stock axle is a Dana 44 in the front. You definitely will have to re-gear to gain the power back. If you are not too ******* it the Dana 44 will still serve you well, but if you horse it, especially off road, you will more than likely snap axles and U-joints. If that happens, you might want to consider upgrading to a Dana 60. The rear axle is most likely a Ford 8 or 9, that information is contained in the axle code on the Safety Compliance sticker located on the driver side rear door post. If you can post that someone here can interpret it for you. A visual id of the rear can also identify it, a 8 has the removable cover on the rear side and no way to separate the case from the axle, the 9 has the bolts to remove the carrier on the front side of the case.

Good luck,

:)>-

You need to start you own post. That way your questions don't get lost in some one else's string. Yes you need to change both or you will get a very unpleasant surprise when you go into 4X4.

Good luck,

Seabronco is correct. The 80-96 fullsize broncos have the Dana44 TTB front end. The Ford 9" was used until 86, and the Ford 8.8" came in 83 and up. When changing from 3.55/3.50 to 4.56, you will need a new carrier for the ring gear in the front d44 TTB axle assembly. Also, for the rear, there are different carriers for limited slip vs open gearing. There is a ton of good info and links inthe Tech Articles forum. One that I refer to constantly is "Miesk5's Homepage". JSM84
