I THOUGHT I KNEW FORDS IN AND OUT,BUT THIS HAS ME STUMPED. I HAVE AN 89 FS,351W,AND THE FUEL PUMP IS HUMMING,LOUDLY.THE HUMM GOES UP AND DOWN WITH THE IDLE AND THE TRUCK IS REALLY EATING GAS. I CHANGED THE PLUGS AND THEY WERE BAD SOOTY BLACK. ALL SENSORS WERE REPLACED,ALONG WITH THE IDLE CONTROL VALVE,AND NEW EEC AND FUEL RELAYS WERE PUT IN.CLEANED ALL ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS,AND VACCUME IS OR SEEMS TO BE WORKING WITH NO LEAKS.NOW THAT I VE DONE THIS MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON ONCE IN A WHILE,WHEN THE PUMP STARTS HUMMING. SOMETIMES THERE IS NO HUMM,NO LIGHT,AND THE TRUCK RUNS SUPER,BAD FUEL CONTROL PRESSURE VALVE ?,BAD FILTER,CLOGGED FUEL RETURN TO TANK ? I M THINKING THIS MAY BE A OVER PRESSURE PROBLEM. THE PUMP IS ON THE L RAIL ALONG WITH APPEARS TO BE A LARGE IN LINE FILTER.I HOPE SOMEONE CAN OFFER SOME HELP,BEFORE I OFFER UP MORE COIN TO THE FORD GOD.WHAT IS IT WITH BRONCOS ANYWAY.CASE OF BEER TO WHOEVER HELPS ME GET THIS FIXED.

Sounds like the fuel pressure regulator to me. Most of the time there is a shrader valve on the fuel rail, you can put a gauge on it and find out what the pressure is.

A failing pump can be loud. But your pumps are getting over worked due to a stopped up filter can cause it to be loud. When you turn your key on and the pump don't stop after a secound or 2. Means it's a pressure problem. The pump should shut off when the right pressure is built up. if not the pump will keep pumping. So check the Pressure Reg. bad injector's or fuel rail bleeding down not allowing pressure to build.
