Talk about wanting to smack myself with a hammer! I am preparing to drive my rig from san diego to virginia and am debating how to mount a decent radio and speakers for the drive. Kept thinking under dash this, box speakers that. Now I run across this post and it all becomes clear.....talk about answer right under your nose.

In the center consol is one of the best ideas. You can lock it. I would get a good CD player though because a cheap one will skip a lot being mounted on its side. I mounted 6x9 speakers in boxes that I found at Best Buy and screwed them to the floor behind the drivers and passenger seat and ran the wires under the carpet. As well as not getting your EB broken into in the school parking lot because it looks like you have a crappy old AM stereo, you keep in original look which is getting fewer by the day.

Good idea! I am going to hit Frys this week then. I just got mine back tonite and am down the road in SD from you. It looks like it is sporting some kind of electrical short as is though, left turn signal the bulb seems to glow in the speedometer casing all the time unless you just used and reset the signal. It doesn't click back and forth. So am looking at some repairs before trying to install a stereo system. Where did you run power from? Old radio hook up?

Tie into the fuse for the radio because they usually have some type of noise reducer on them, maybe not an EB though, and ground directly to the body using a short ground wire or you will get a whine from the altinator.

Its really frustrating and i can't figure it out are there any ideas.

Well, the problem with a 1973 Ford Bronco radio is that is a 1973 radio and you are not the only one who has even messed with it. So, without seeing how it is wired, it is hard to say what is going on and why. A couple things you can check are if it is wired to the ignition switch in the ON position or wired directly to the started or battery. Also, you might have a short in the wiring and it could be going to ground. Unless you pull it out or take a look where everything is going behind it, it is too hard to tell what you have going on. It should have one wire going to ground and one going to the fuse box controlled by the ON switch. It does not have a memory, so there should not be any other wires. To be quite honest, I would put a new one in between the seats in a box and never turn the AM on again.

Alright but would it be ok if i cliped the wires to the am and would the fuse for the a/m radio if it was hooked to one work to run my new radio or should i just wire it to the ignition switch i know some radios pull lots of amperage but would the key or fuse box in the bronco be to small i orderded the box from tuffy products and i think im going to make speaker boxes and im looking for places to put them. You are a really big help thanks

If it were me, I would clip the wires and run the new wire with the old AM wire from the fuse box and not the ignition. Most cars have some type of noise reducer wired to the fuse box for the radio to help with alternator noise. I don

i dont know if theres a big difference electrial wise between the 73s and 77s but i have a 50x4 MOSFET panasonic deck and im runnin a rockford fosgate 600x2ch amp with 2 12" punchs in the back. along with a set of 6x9 infinitys and some 6.5 pioneer premiers in the doors. the whole system sounds amazing and i can leave it all on with out the car running and crank it up for a good 30 mins and start the car saftly. you say that when you turn the am one on it drains the baterry? or did i read that wrong...also, if you have any carpender capabilites build your own center counsle thats what i did and its pretty sweet you can do wahtever you want to it. i got 6 cupholders a center storage lockable stereo comparment where a little flap of wood flips over it and i just used a basic little consule lock. also i put 4 aux toggles in it to run all my off road lights. its a pretty sweet deal. i wuold recomend it if you have the capabilites...

p.s. does any one know a good place to hook up an electronic choke? i was thinking the remote on my amp then i got to thinking that when i crank the motor over the amp turns off so in theroy i think it would turn the choke off right when i need it....thanks
