Hey everyone,

Just a quick question for you. Has anyone had any luck replacing the OEM power steering pump on a '93 Bronco, A.K.A. the "old noisemaker"? It seems that just about most of the "stock" pumps made a horrible moaning noise, just wondering what kind of luck any of you have had with an aftermarket one. I see that Advanced sells a remanufactured one my Cardone. I know on my old '79 it was pretty easy to pull of and swap out, just curious is all, thanks B-Cack

Sure. You can replace the Ford unit with the stronger Saginaw pump. It's a popular & fairly easy swap, especially when running larger tires. Lots of info about it is available, here's a link: http://members.***.net/azfourwheeling/sagswap.html

It's almost a no brainer. You can get one from a F250 at your local friendly auto recycler. Be sure to get the mounting bracket and pulley, the Ford pump has a smaller shaft, and the high pressure hose or just buy a new one. I had to do some fabricating as I couldn't find a mount for a V-belt installation. You can use the used one that comes out of the F250, (wow sort of a tongue twister), but I would clean it first and perhaps install a rebuild kit. The only difficult part of rebuilding one is replacing the shaft bushing, you need a press for that. The good news is that if the shaft bushing is not scored up you really don't need to replace it. The Saginaw is such a good pump, that you probably could skip the rebuild and go strait to installation. I have opened Saginaws that are 25 years old that are in great shape. It is a tough pump and well worth the effort. My truck steers like a sports car with it in, it is easier steering than a lot of small cars I have driven. In fact you might want to be a little cautious the first time you drive it until you get the feel for the extremely responsive steering.
