Here's the situation. My bronco has great power steering if you're driving nascar. The power steering only works on left turns. When I turn right it's like turning a ship. A rebuild kit is 30 bucks, but I have a 93 Grand Marquis 4.6L. I was wondering if the parts might be interchangeable. I know the bronco is a lot more vehicle, any help would be appreciated.

Ok, here's the deal. I have no idea.

Now that we have *that* out of the way here's whatcha do. You might could swap them even if it isn't a direct replacement (maybe it is & maybe it isn't. I surely don't know) but that will be a *lot* of work and if you want to know if it'll swap right in then you need to get friendly with one of the counter guys at your local junkyard and ask him to check the Hollander's interchange manual. Any self-respecting boneyard has one or more (it's that huge oil & grease-stained book you always see lying on the counter). The Hollander's manual will tell you EVERYTHING about what will swap with what and if you should chance upon on on Ebay or elsewhere then GRAB it because they are priceless sources of information. Get friendly enough with the guy and maybe you can score an old one that they were going to toss.

Junkyard?!?! I love that idea, only in Southern California they are few and far between, and almost NO good ol' boy connections. I've called some yards and got a "don't have it good luck" I asked why the heck they aren't more yards around, something about ground contamination with price of land and haz mat stuff. Thanks for the Hollander's suggestion.

Holy Crap. I just priced the Hollander's Manual... that's half of what I paid for the bronco!!! But probably worth it.

Here's one on Ebay right now, has 7 days left on the auction. Granted $250 ain't cheap but if you stop for a moment to think just HOW valuable the info is. If I weren't saving my pennies for a junkyard AOD I'd be bidding on THIS one. I wouldn't ***** around with it, he's offering a buy-it-now option and I'd use it. I really do plan on getting one, but someone in the neighborhood called the deputies about me driving back & forth to the package store in reverse & they came by the house & said I really needed to stop doing that and just fix my truck. Jerks

As for the junkyard thing, yeah that's pretty much a cussword out there in LaLa-land. Wish I could help you but you're already exporting some of those crazy product labeling laws to the rest of us out here in the real world. I just don't think I could live anyplace where the freaking GOVERNMENT advocates simply *crushing* any vehicle that's more than 15-20 yrs old just *because* it's 15-20yrs old. I know you guys grow some really good $hit out there, but really, please, you CAN'T do it ALL the time put the bong down. Just put it down. I just can't even imagine the kind of hoops a guy has to jump thru to own & operate a junkyard out in CA and it probably makes the cost of used parts just about equal to buying it new. Don't get me wrong, I lived out on Catalina for 18 months and the sunsets were awesome & the kelp beds were beyond awesome but how much longer will it be before they ban automobiles alltogether and simply mandate everyone roll around on a Segway ? Ok, sorry for the rant, getting down off my soapbox now.

u say its only on left turns that the p.s. is working and not on right??? then the pump is working. i would look at the steering box for wear and binding. also fluid level and condtion is allways important. Also any worn out front end part that could cause a problem. ie balljoints tierods. steering shaft to box could be worn

I agree, if it's turning one way super tight and the other, well, not so tight then the pitman arm may be the culprit. maybe not on correct?

Ohh, Bad JuJu. Any chance you or a previous owner touched that ***** on top of the steering box hoping to "tighten" it up a bit ? Sounds to me like that's exactly what happened somewhere along the line if it's binding to one side & not the other. That ***** is there *strictly* as a preload adjustment but since it's right out there in the open a lot of guys think giving it a turn or two is the solution and that's just *not* the thing to do, if someone DID adjust it you've got a burned box & need a new one but it sounds like it's probably cooked anyways regardless of how it happened.

My mechanic told me it was the gear box, something about a paddle inside that does something. I've never worked on steering so I was like, "ok Ken." Just to clarify it turns GREAT on left turns, hard as heck on right turns, but it turns (the faster i'm going the easier it is to turn, kind like unassisted steering). My dad's got a 94 F-150 5.0 he rarely drives, think i could switch it out without him noticing?

If the box is cooked, does that mean it cant be rebuilt?
