possible stuck heat riser...

I think I may have a stuck heat riser valve its on an 84 with a straight 6, my question is, is it possible to access the valve without removing the entire intake and exhaust manifolds? or do you have rip it all off? Any help would be great

Why do you think your heat riser is stuck? What is the symptom? Do you have a mechanical or vacuum operated heat riser?

the reason I think it may be stuck is it all of a sudden had a big loss of power, especially going up hills, hills that I used to be able to fly up, now I have to downshift to 3rd and putt up them, I am not sure is it is vacuum or mechanical, I havent noticed a vacuum line going to that area, Is there a way to tell which one I have?

A mechanical one has what looks like a coil spring about 1 1/2 inches in diameter and is right at the exhaust connection to the manifold.

I have one of those but it is below where the carb bolts on, is that my heat riser or is that something else?

OK, I found it and it has been stuck... I sprayed some wd-40 on it and it seemed to free it up, but I think one of the springs must have fallen off because it stays in the same spot whether it is hot or cold. Does anyone know what position the open position is, should it be up and in towards the engine or should it be down towards the ground?? any advice would be greatly appreciated.

A heat risers function is simpy to allow pre heated air from the exhaust manifold to flow into the air intake during cold start and warm up.

If you are experiencing a noticeable power loss, it is most likely NOT the heat riser.

I would suspect the catalytic convertor from your brief description.

But, that said, when was the last time you did a full tune-up including a new fuel filter?

I have done everything I know how to do, filters, new plugs, cap, points, belts although I do not know how to do timing that is about the only thing I havent done. I probably shoud have my exhaust checked? is it possible that the float in the carb is at the wrong level?
