pinning down sounds

So, I took my new (to me) 92 automatic bronco with a 351 out for some off roading and I noticed a couple of sounds that I'd like to figure out.

The first one I noticed was that the car seems to shake more than it should at high speeds. It goes away when I accelerate a lot.

The second sound happened after a couple of hours of off roading. The car now makes a whirring noise when the low is engaged and I accelerate. It didn't do this when we started. I was using the low gear a lot, though.

First thing I'd check is the u-joints in both driveshafts. One or more may be going bad / need grease. With the engine off, tranny in PARK and t-case in 2HI, grab the driveshaft and try to wiggle it like you're turning it. IF a u-joint is bad, you'll see some slack, maybe even notcie a missing cap or busted joint.

as far as the shaking i would also check the whell bearings and the balence of the tires also on the drive shaft there should be a little weight, it will look like a little peace of metal. for the whine it might need fluid. but mine makes the same noies in 4lo

You didn't say what kind of off roading.. but if you were in mud, and it stuck to the inside or outside of your tire rims, it could cause them to be out of balance and would cause vibrations. Just clean it off, if that is the case.

check the bushings on the radius arms as well

tracking down a shake or "death wobble" could be damn near impossible. but never over look anything and if you think it may need replacing, replace it
