Today I had a U-joint break replacing the joint isnt the problem, the problem I am having is when it broke is seared about 1/4 of the metal around the yoke off and needs to be replaced. I know nothing about diffs, I have an 86, and from what I have read i have either a 8.8 or 9 inch rear end correct? How much work is it to replace the yoke? Any help would be appreciated.

I have seen both 8.8 and 9 inch in the '86. The yoke is held on by one bolt, very easy to change. It takes a high amout of torque like 217 foot pound or something, I guesstimated one time on my last Bronco. Lent out my torque wrench so I had to make do. My bearing would get pretty damn hot, you could smell it after driving for 15 mins or so. Also would be a good idea to change the pinion seal while you are there, let the new yoke and seal break in together
