I just picked up an abandoned 83 Bronco XLT from the county... First time ford owner, Im a Mopar guy but a cheap truck is a cheap truck and at least its American, right? Anyway. I have no clue how to operate the tailgate and there is a 6 month old dead tree trunk in the back i cant get out. (I have no keys yet either) Is there a scanned copy of an owners manual floating around the forums anywhere i can check out?

Also, do the tops come off of these things? I havent yet looked because the damn tree is in there.

Welcome to Broncozone! I can't help with the owners manual but the tailgate I can tell you a little about. The window must be all the way down for it to open. The handle is on the inside, just reach in after the window is down. The window is operated from either one of two switches, one is the key switch on the left side of the tailgate (outside) and one is located on the bottom left side of the dash (near headlight switch). The vehicle power must be on for the dash switch to work, the key switch is allways powered. It is very common for one of these switches to go bad and not allow the window to operate from one or both locations. Hopefully you can get the key and the tailgate switch still works. If not (and the dash switch is not working) you are going to have to get past that tree to pull off the access panel on the inside of the tailgate.

Edit:

Forgot to mention that all Bronco tops come off. Just remove plastic trim (if its there) and unbolt it. You will have to get that tailgate window open first, though.
