Timing is a good place to start. what about a pressure test? Have you noticed a leak? Is your fluid recovery system working? your radiator cap? If you've done all those things, it might be a bad gasket between the intake and heads, or the head gaskets, or the heads them selves. if you release the pressure from the radiator, what does your temp do? check them out and see what happens. You needed to take those heads off and flow bench them anyway, huh?

Check the following:

1. radiator has build up restricting the flow of coolant, repair or replace.

If coolant levels are falling check these.

2. if exhaust smells of antifreeze, you may have to replace head gasket.

3. check for leaks on the heating core and supply hoses.

you have already gone for the obvios with the thermostat.
