For the most part you want to leave the OD on and forget about it. Hitting the OD switch turns it off & locks the transmission out of overdrive, leaving you with a 3-speed transmission. The only difference you'll see is that your milage will go down considerably. The truck uses that 4th gear whenever it's able to. The only times you'd want to use the lockout is in very hilly or mountainous terrain where you spend a lot of time climbing & being in 4th is causing the engine to lug or hunt for gears (hunting is when the road conditions cause the computer to constantly change gears searching for the best one. It's not only annoying but it wears on the tranny so if you're driving a section of roadway <again, usually hilly> that's causing this then you'd want to turn off the OD until you leave that stretch of roadway). You'll also want to turn it off if/whenever you tow something, trying to haul a trailer in OD will burn up the transmission. Some people take just the opposite approach and leave it off all the time only turning it on when driving on the highway, while that doesn't hurt anything I think it causes the overall milage to go down quite a bit. As long as it's off when climbing long steep inclines or towing AND the transmission gets regular maintenance (changing the ATF once every 10yrs or wheneve it turns brown does not count) it'll be fine.

If your in heavy traffic, turn it off to prevent constant downshifting. If your just tooling around or on the highway make sure its on to save on gas and keep your rpms down.

Not sure if this is what you are asking but here it is. If the overdrive light is on on the dash the overdrive is off. If the light on the dash is off then overdrive is activated.

ATF, Automatic Transmission Fluid. That's the pink oily stuff that you put in the transmission. Ck yours, if it's brown or smells burnt it's WAY past time to have it changed. Usually can be ck'd by looking for a yellow-topped, T-handled dipstick on the passenger side of the engine close to the firewall. If in doubt have a shop ck it for you. The fluid should be pink, if not *change* it. ATF should be changed every 30K.

Yea dude overdrive is pretty nice for the highway, my bronco is an 86 and just a 3 speed C6 auto, i kinda wish it has an EOD in it, but ive also heard the C6 is a beast of a transmission lol. Stronger then EOD anyway so its kinda hard to complain.

One question i have is cant you put an overdrive on your truck if it dont have have one? I remeber watchin that show trucks on spike one day and that guy stacy had that 67 chevy C10(copperhead), now im pretty sure i remember him puttin an aftermarket overdrive on the trans. Can you get these and put them on 4x4s or is just for 2wds?

(and the truck on the show was a 2wd if you didnt catch that from the "C"10, K10 is a 4x4 chevy)
