I have a 76 Bronco with a 302. I am getting a pegged out gage when i turn the key on, just like it's shorted to ground. when i crank the truck it starts slowly going down to 0, it takes about 30 seconds to get all the way down. if i just straight crank the truck the gage jumps to 40 and then slowly drifts to 0. i put the wire straight to ground and it pegs out like the gage is good. i put a new sending unit on it and it acts the same way as the old. ANY SUGGESTIONS??????

the only thing I can think of is that the unit is not getting a good ground. Did you use Teflon tape on the threads of the new sender? They are designed to self seal so no tape or **** is necessary. It depends on the threads to make a good ground. There should also be a ground strap from the intake manifold to the fire wall to improve the ground path for the instruments.

Good luck,

:)>-

I did use teflon tape the first time but not the second. no difference.

I have a ground strap from the fire wall to the engine block where the battery grounds. will that suffice???

Thank you for the input.

There really should be one from the intake to the fire wall. Also, the on you mentioned should be removed cleaned and re- installed, that may also help. Check the condition of the cable at the connector to make sure it is not corroded.
