Hey what up everyone? I couldn't find any good froums on the F350, so I decided to try the bronco forum. I'm not to familiar to fords and their engines but Im pretty sure some of the broncos have the same engine, if they don't just delete it haha. Anyway my question is my trucks got a 400 in it, is there any engine i can swap to thats smaller? I mean believe me i love the power and everything but I dont wanna sell it just cuz the gas is killing me. Spent too much time on it as it is.

I know that they came with 351w in them as well but I dont think that the bell housing is the same for the transmission. If you swap in a smaller motor, I dont think that you will get much better mileage, it is a huge bread truck you are driving (I have had two f350 crew cab 4x4's, I feel your pain. You might consider installing an aftermarket fuel injection kit on it, that might help. My last F350 had an injected 460 in it and it was lifted 6" with 35" tires on it and with a couple of mods, I got 14 on the highway and 11 city and still was able to pull a house if I wanted to. Here is what I had on my truck that improved my power and mileage:

K&N cold air kit.

Full MSD ignition 6A box, coil, wires, cap, rotor.

Trans Dapt throttle body spacer.

160 degree thermostat and advanced the timing.

Just food for thought...

Welcome to Bronco Zone!!! You might also find some info on your F-350 at Ford Truck Enthusiasts (www.ford-trucks.com), as I'm a member on there, too. Except for an engine swap, you can make sure the 400 is intop runnign condition. Any vacuum leaks, clogged fuel filter, mis-adjusted carb, things like that will rob fuel mileage. Use of synthetic **** in the differentials may help, too. If I was to swap to another motor, I would actually go for a 460 instead of a 351M or 300I-6. Sometimes a motor that's underpowered will get even less fuel mileage on these heavier trucks. My experience with the 460 though is they will get 10-12 mpg whether you're just driving or towing a 10K lb trailer. JSM84

Lots of guys here are on stock suspension, too. I thought about lifting the F-350 and running taller tires, but the 4-dr longbed chassis flexxes way too much offroad for my liking. Can't open the doors on unlevel ground, JSM84

the only engine that is smaller that you can directly swap in is the 351m the it ran the same bellhousing as the 400 also if you want to go bigger you can go to a 429 Cobra Jet or the 460 the also run the same bellhousing as the 400 i would also recomend going bigger rather than smaller i have a 390 in a 76 F-150 short bed and get 2-3 mpg less than my brother with his 79-F-150 longbed with the 400 my 76 also has a edelbrock top end on it his is stock.

Well, it looks like you've already been told that you can swap in either the 351M-V8 or the 300-I6 but that's about it for anything smaller than your 400 that will be a simple bolt-in. The 460-V8 may indeed give you better milage but it's hard to know until it's in there and not everyone sees an improvement, depends a lot on local terrain, personal driving habits & vehicle usage (towing, toy , daily driver, etc)

if you install a cage the frame won't flex so much, but with the long wheelbase you're going to invest in some thick skidd plates.as well being so long you'll probaly need a big lift. not impossible to wheel a crew/long but you're still going to have more problems than a short truck.

Hey if I were you I'd look into swapping in a diesel. With a diesel youre probably looking at mid 20s, and you can one up a prius and run veggie oil for free :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> .
