im darryl, finally got a full size bronco. 86 with a straight six. when i bought it the guy said it hadnt smoked before he let it sit for several months. he said 5 mos i dont know if i believe him. anyway the truck stinks like gas and smokes black really bad when its running. when its idling sounds like a racing cam in it or something. i am a carpenter not a mechanic. though i am having the same problem after my 83 datsun 280zx sat for almost a year. now it smokes and idles rough. i can handle most things but all the vacuum lines and the whole carb thing and the oil smells like gas i may have bitten off more than i can chew. i have searched and read through the forums and i am glad to have found a place where everyones passionate about the same truck. i will be tinkering with it all day today and happy to take pictures and all if anyone would be willing to help me out.

welcome darryl. i have an 85 with a straight six in it as well so hopefully i can be a good reference for you. Can you elaborate a bit more on the smoke. Is it a bluish smoke or a white smoke. Does it only do it at idle or does it do it while driving. Does it puff smoke when you shift(or the tranny shifts) only?

Smoke could be several different things. If its white smoke then its going to be coolant. The head on your truck is pretty tough and id be surprised if you had a cracked head or leaking head gasket.

Bluish smoke is going to be oil burning somewhere along the line. If it puffs out smoke when the truck shifts then you are looking at valve stem seals more then likely. If it smokes all the time, or worse when cold you may be looking at piston rings not sealing very well. Now my truck started blowing smoke(valve stem seals) after the 200k mark. I poured some of that stop smoke stuff in every oil change and it seemed to help. This is by no means a permanent fix but it may give you a little extra time. While i dont typically pour "additives" in my engines this stuff is just like a seal conditioner.

The truck stinking like gas... do you mean exhaust or unburnt fuel? the tail gates rust out on these things and so do the floors so the exhaust smell usually gets sucked into the cab. I know a few people who have gotten rid of their broncos because of this. If its unburnt fuel its likely you have a fuel leak on your carb. take your air cleaner off and see if you can move your carb around by hand. the carb base sometimes works loose and you need to remove the carb and tighten the base from the underside(torx). Also the air valve that comes off the carb leaks and breaks after awhile. and on the left side of the carb(looking at it) there is a stem that has vac lines and things on it. check that area for fuel dripping.

so the smoke is actually closer to black. it was kind of hard to see when i was under the hood with a face full of it. found a leak in my manifold gasket (intake/exhaust). bought a new one for ten bucks and plan on installing it tomorrow. thing is i noticed the manifold bolts were crooked in the front. the washer or whatever had slipped crooked and was only securing one side. looks like the manifold somehow shifted and fell in the front and raised in the rear. i was hoping to be able to just undo the bolts and slip the old one out and the new one in but given where the lower bolts are im going to have to take the carb and some hoses and **** off for access. i am posting some pics if you look you will see the soot where its been leaking. i have been told that if its leaking exhaust its probably sucking air on the intake side since they share the same gasket and flanges and **** and that could cause the smoke. i figured out my back window problem after some searching online seems the safety switch for the tailgate handle wasnt allowing it to open. seems to be slow but works now. havent gotten around to taking the plugs out for diagnosis yet but hopefully this gasket will take care of the problem. amazingly the truck drives great. plenty of power, doesnt stumble or anything so i dont think its the valves. honestly i am a carpenter not a mechanic so i am a little intimidated by all the hoses and wires and such so i plan on taking alot of reference pics. i definately dont want this to turn into a week long project. i need the truck now. i own rental property in indiana and i am living in new jersey so .... has to be dependable. which is what i thought i was buying. thanks for replying. i really am i fish out of water here. but ive always wanted a truck like this.

the truck looks really nice!. i see oversized flares, fenders must have been rusted out because it still has little tires

as far as your smoke problem. Yes that gasket set is very important! I had a bad exhaust leak on mine when i bought it but it didnt smoke. Pulling the mainfold(s) is a pain as well, but not nearly as bad as an FI engine. I dont remember removing the carb, just undoing the fuel line and taking all the manifold bolts out and pulling it back far enough to put the new gasket in. You might be worse off though. I would recommend pulling them off and cleaning the mating surface with a die grinder and a scotch brite pad. I may be wrong but i thought the intake and exhaust gaskets were different. I know the flanges bolt in the same location. I would recommend getting a few new studs for the exhaust before you pull it apart.

I do also see a few melted connectors sitting by the carb but one thing at a time. get those gaskets on there and see how things run.
