New Fuel Pump Installed

Hi Everyone!

Well I finally installed the new fuel pump on my '94 Bronco. New filter and new fuel pump relay too. (I used Carter for the pump and a motorcraft filter).

It ran like a champ for 10-15 minutes, then I got the "check engine" light on and I start to lose power. I don't have a computer, so I can't check the trouble code. To be honest, I only changed the fuel pump and the sender unit in the tank. I kept the hardware and the harness, which looked O.K. to me. Maybe this was the mistake. Anyway, does anyone have an idea. I seem to have read on the forum, that someone had the same experience, after replacing the fuel pump.

Why would the truck run like great and then all of the sudden start stuttering. :wacko:

Just as an aftertought, does anyone out there know of a good mechanic in the West Palm Beach, Florida area who doesn't rip me off. I have to get this thing diagnosed.

Check your fuel filter, see if it's plugged with any debris from inside the tank. Also, re-check all the lines and fittings for any leaks.

As I said I have installed a new fuel filter, the tank had nothing inside, it was clean, spotless. I drained all the lines and checked that they were clear. The only thing I am not sure about is the wiring harness, (I used the same with the hardware on top of the tank), if it could have a bad wire? That would explain, that when I tapped the tank the first time, it got the pump working for a while. This was before I installed the new pump. I didn't change it since after inspecting it it looked good. I even cleaned the connectors, pins on both ends. When I went to the Ford dealer here, they offered to sell me the whole kit Pump,sender and the hardware with new harness for $300. I would of had to splice the harness on the frame of my truck, since theirs was a new one and different than the old one. I would of also had to remove the fuel gage float from the old one and mount it on the new one. It was just too much money. I declined and instead I bought the Carter fuel pump, which I mounted on the existing rig. Maybe that was the mistake? $-)

maybe your fuel pressure regulator? did you test your fuel pressure on the rail?

It wasn't the fuel filter, it's the PCM Module. See my post from today. Thanks anyway

Do what Bobstrat suggested; do a self test; PCMs rarely go South... save your $

I went to the site you suggested, it's awesome! I printed out all the material and I am going to study it this weekend. I don't know and I am not very good at electronics. I can do the mechanical work, but never did much of electrical.

Well, I guess I just have to learn. It is a great site.
