My bronco has this strange problem, When driving, the four wheel drive stick kicks out of 2 wheel into neutral, it occurs quite frequently, not sure whats happening there and i keep having to pull over on the side of the road. Took it to my auto tech teacher and he has no clue whats going on either other than i bump the stick.....which is not it. It usually kicks out of gear when crusing at around 55 or when under acceleration, any help would be great.

dana 20 has synchro sleeves just like a manual tranny (without the brass synchros though) these are probably worn, causing it to jump out of gear. I'd probably pull the tcase and have a look at the shift sleeve and teeth on the gear that's on the input shaft may be splined to or just part of the input shaft- never had a dana 20 apart, but this is what it sounds like to me.

they got a lot of eb's in the junk yards around your neck of the woods? $-)
I wish, but lots of same year trucks, still lots of goodies to scavenge from the trucks! Got all my tailgate hardware(think every part but the sheetmetal)for ten bucks, would have cost me 100 or two from the bronco parts guys

I would guess that you have a problem with the spring and ball that hold the shifter in place. Most likely junk built up in the assy or the spring "shrunk". Either way - its about a 20 min fix by a compentent mechanic. Can be done in the truck - just a little tricky.

And I have rebuilt a Dana 20 - it did the same thing after rebuild.

Simply took the spring out (the ball falls out) and stretched it about 1/2" then reinstalled.

Problem solved.
