I bought a 89 Bronco and I want to put a straight axle under the front. I bought a set of 15x10 wheels with 38x12.50 mounted on them and I was told I would have to run a dana 60 in the front so I want to get one before I buy a lift kit. Can I run a dana 44 or do I need to go for the dana 60. Can I get one out of a certain year of truck? If so what year. Should I get rid of the 8.8 in the rear and go with a 9". Also what gears do I need to turn the 38'S. This is just a toy and it will be mainly off road except maybe to the store and back. Thanks for any help.

For strength and ease of gathering parts, I'd go for an 80-96 F-350, which has the kingpin Dana 60 front and the Sterling 10.25" rear axle. The 10.25" is about a direct bolt-in replacement for your 89 Ford 8.8", and the later models with EFI will have the tone ring for your VSS (speed sensor). This is a full-floater axle, and much stronger than the 8.8" or 9" in my opinion, and more able to handle 38" tires or taller. You can also look for a GM 14-bolt axle for the rear. As for the front, 38" tires are pushing the limits of the Dana44. While I'm running that combo on my 78 Bronco, I have upgraded to chromoly axles and stronger u-joints. You can find donor truck info in the sticky thread on SAS (Solid Axle Swap) at the beginning of this forum section, and also look at my Superford.org gallery for my SAS on the 84 Bronco. Good luck finding one-ton axles or a complete donor truck, JSM84

Thanks for your help. I found a 14 bolt axle and the guy said I could have it. It came off his 85 Blazer. As for the dana 60 I have not had any luck yet. Thanks again.
