Ok so this weekend I tore into the 400m I pulled out of my old parts truck and my goal was to rebuild it and put it in my bronco this summer hopefully producing over 400ft/lbs of torque, however the motor looks like its original and it is really worn.

There are intense carbon build ups in the cylinders and some scoring on the cylinder walls, the timing chain was missing a tooth and several others were cracked and or worn down. So my guess was it skipped a tooth and ran too rich. I have not pulled the crank yet but just looking at the cylinder walls only way I can use the motor is if I send it to a machine shop to have it bored and cleaned. So instead of doing this i figured I would just go for a new 400m short block but I can't find them anywhere online. Can anyone help me find a 400m short block. I want a 400m so I can use my heads and many of my other parts on it. And I want the longer stroke versus my 351m. Please help

The 400 is the same block as the 351,the only difference's are the crank and the piston's. Just use your block and get it bored and what not and get some 400 piston's and a 400 crank. The rod's are the same length for both motor's.

barnett high performance offers complete engines, and just about anything else you can want, i also had a heck of a time finding parts or engines in this block when i was looking, I myself am going to build the 427 stroker kit out of my 351, they are claiming bout 400 horse and allmost 500 torque with a mild cam.

In the long run you would probably be better off putting in a 460..
this has crossed my mind many times but i already have so many parts for the 351m, 400m. I think i am just going to get one of the blocks bored out and use the crank from the 400 with new oversized pistons and port the heads and hop up the top end like i was going to before. I think this will all work out its just more than i wanted to do because i was hopeing to start with a solid block and bottum end and just do cam and upper.

351M and 400 are the same block, only difference is pistons and crank. 351 cleveland is a block all it's own as is the 351 windsor

Okay, I have the windsor motor in my 94 and it's obviously a small block. I've never seen a Cleveland but have heard nothing but good about them and I was also told they're a big block. I've seen the 351M Haven't looked into them much because I don't hear many good things about them? Well, looks like a field trip to the junk yard in a day or two to learn myself something! WOO HOO! I LOVE junk yard field trips!!!

as far as i know the cleveland was only used in cars from about 1970 to maybe 74 or 75, they have the same bellhousing bolt pattern as the windsor, but they are more like the M block, heads are interchangable and cams i think, the windsor is basically a 302 that has a higher deck to accept the longer stroke needed for the 351 cubic inch, M block was basically designed after the cleveland but had the 460 bolt pattern on the bellhousing and had bout a 1 inch higher deck so I've read.

Hey Bronco Bill, I gave away a rebuilt 351 Cleveland last year to my cousin. He wanted it for his Cougar and I wanted it moved. That was 2 years ago and it sutill their. Og well ,he,s in no hurry. Neither am I . I am curious to get into my 400 this summer and rebuild it. Hope fully to get it easier on gas. The oil pressuer is falling and I change and checked everything to see the cause and believe it ,s about ready to re-build before it goes.
