My front end Dana 44 is quite loose, I recently bought my 70 bronco and just started doing some maintenance on it. changed tires lubed all steering linkage, etc. Now when I'm driving down the road it will just follow any rut, I have about an 1/8 - 1/4 play in steering wheel. Does this sound like steering box or linkage? steering is mechanical not power. any help would be appreciated, Thanks

If its anything like my truck its the box. they are notorious for getting "loose"

Start with putting the front axle tubes on stands.

Wiggle & shake everything underneath...!! All the linkage., wheels up & down., side to side.

The usual culprit is the trackbar bushings. (If,while at rest, wheels on ground., moving the steering wheel back & forth causes the truck front end to move left & right., ....track bar bushings)

If you can wiggle the wheel up & down., it's king-pins/ball-joints or wheel bearings loose or worn.

That's not much play in the steering. Move the shaft by hand & watch the pitman arm....that will allow you to judge the box.

Fill in YOUR sig. page & Info. for more specific help.

Ditto on Bullybob. I had similar steering with mine, sometimes called "slot car steering" because of the way it follows cracks and ruts. It is intensified with wide tires that love to grab onto things like that. On mine it turned out to be that the ball joints needed replacement. However, other items like mentioned by Bullybob can cause it.

Good luck,

:)>-
