okay so i got some new warn hubs to replace my factory hubs. the drivers side was not locking. i have changed automatic locking hubs before and the ****** style on the late 80's but never the manual locking ones from the early 80's. i took the cap off the drivers side hub and the hub lock ring, the stop ***** and the snap ring. now acording to haynes the rest of the hub should slide out at this point. its not. it wont budge at all. its an 84 if that maters. also will i need to reuse that spring in the new warn assembly? it doesent really say and it was in a different spot on the drivers side and passenger side so im not sure where it is supposed to be.

There should be a clip on the axle and a big lock ring almost 3 inches across, locks into the inner circumference of the hub hope that helps

i think i got both of those. the one on the inner circumference of the hub is really thin right? and doesent make a complete cirlce? it stops about an inch from being a full circle and looks like a piece of thick wire right?

okay i just finished the passenger side. it came apart and went back together easy. so that makes me think that there is something messed up in the drivers side one preventing it from coming apart right.

if you got the outer ring and the inner circlip it should come out. What i usually do is thread two of the screws back in that hold the cap on(only without the cap) and pull on those. some times its hard to grab on. also sometimes if you tap the axle itself in lightly with a rubber hammer it will break it free(assuming someone didnt grease it or they buried it in water)

yea i got everything out that holds it in there and it still will not budge. i tried putting two screws back in like you said and even got a couple hammers on them to try and **** it out and it still didnt budge. didnt even look like it wanted to. i broke the tip of two of my biggest ***** drivers trying to pry it out. somethings gotta be messed up with it. i jacked up that corner of the truck to get the wieght/pressure off of that axle but that didnt help at all. one thing that i did notice is that compared to the other side this one looked like it was greased with mud. i mean it was sealed pretty good but it was all chunky in there like red clay almost. the other side looked almost brand new so i'm guessing somebody did some work on that side recently.

There's nothing else that holds it so keep working at it. Don't use ***** drivers to pry it out, do as previously stated, thread 2 of the screws in and use them as a handle wiggle up and down and side to side. It must just be seized on the axle. It has to come out squarely just take your time and don't get frustrated. It will come

If it is siezed to the axle you might try tapping the axle back. Or since you are replacing anyway tap on the hub assembley.

If it sticks force it, if it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

have you sprayed it with anything like penetrating ****? heating up the outside of the hub with a torch might also help. clean what you can see really well, maybe some crud is stuck in between the hub and the outer portion where the ring goes. if you are really in a jamb you can make yourself a puller. take some 1/4 plate steel and set your hub cap on it and mark all the holes. you need all of them because they are small. drill those out and in the center of that plate drill/tap or drill and weld a nut on for something like a 1/4-20 bolt. this bolt needs to come to a point at the end. bolt this plate onto your hub and use that 1/4-20 bolt in the center to press against the axle which should have a small indention on the end.

good luck

i swear a little patience can be a stronger tool than anything in the whole garage haha. i got back at that other hub today and had the old one out (with some effort) and the new one back in within about 20 mins. i THINK it should be ready to do some testing now. oh the one thing i'm a little confused about was should i have greesed them. the directions said not to over grease them but it didnt say how much to grease them. they came with a little bit on them but the ones i took out were covered in grease. it would be no big deal to pull them back out now and put a little on them if it needs it.

No you dont need to grease them. The grease makes them sticky and they wont engage or disengage properly. See I knew you could do it
