hey sorry to bother but i'm new to bronco's. i just bought an 89 xlt 4X4 and i know very little about it. it has a 5.0 fuel injected motor but i have no clue as to what tranny(automatic) or transfer case it may have. or what front and rear ends it possibly could have also. i'm also curious as to how you get the back glass to roll down, the switch below dash doesnt work and i understand theres another way but im not sure of it. also how do i use the 4WD i have the auto tranny with the shifter for the trans case on the floor and the locking hubs on the front wheels. and one last thing, when i drive it the transmission kicks in and out of gear at 65 then when it warms up it does it at 45, 55, and 65. any ideas on that also? i apologize for sounding stupid but ive never owned a 4WD before and need to learn. anyhow, thanks in advance for any help. it's very much appreciated.

No worries about sounding anyway. I am the king of newbie questions here. As for the back glass use the round key to lower it in the key hole on the tailgate. If this doesn't work you probably need a new motor for the glass. I need one in mine. It is VERRY slow up and down. My switch doesn't work either. You have dana 44 axle on the front and a ford rear end. C6 transmission, or so i'm told. I can't answer the transmission question other than I have trouble with mine also. Saving up for it to get fixed right now. HOpe this helps.

Welcome to Bronco Zone!!! There should be a paper sticker on the cab when you open the driver's side door, it's called the safety verification label or similar. It will list some info undere trans and axle, in the form of Ford Mtor Co. codes. Post those codes i nyour reply, and someone can decipher them for you. It will tell you the original transmission, rear axle type (Ford 8.8") and gear ratio. You may also want to crawl underneath the Bronco, and check for any tabs, ID labels, etc. The trans ans t-case will have numbers and tags,as shouls both axles. IF you powst your VIN number (list the last 4/5 digits as x's), we ca ntell your original engine size by the 8th character in the VIN, as well as where it was made. JSM84

ok, i have the info on the tag. if anyone can help me in identifying what my truck has i'd greatly appreciate it.

VIN = 1FMEU15N0KLAxxxxx

Type = MPV

WB = 105

Type-GVW = U152

Body = RJ

Trans = T

Axle = 19

Tape = 3

Spring = B 2

and also to the far right there are two codes in a half box

______

|F0175

|T0032

and the ext. paint color codes 1C and 1D and right under the codes in the half box is a number 11.

Anyways hopefully someone can help me out with some of this. Thanks in advance.

Axle code "19" or I9" is the Ford 8.8"rear axle with 3.55;a gear ratio, no limited slip or "open". The front axle is the Dana44 TTB (twin traction Beam), open gears, axle ratio is 3.54:1. trans code "T" is the AOD 4-sp automatic. IF it's slipping out of gear, I would take it to a tranny shop and have it checked. Maybe a fluid & filter change will help, but sounds like it needs to be rebuilt or replaced.

thanks for the info. the tranny isnt slipping, it does fine except that it has a hard shift when it warms up in and out of gear around 45 and higher. i checked the fluid and it was kind of ***** like and also overfull. i'm hoping the fluid and filter is all it needs but someone mentioned a modulater of some sort and something to do with my accelleration may need adjusting also. gonna take it in next week and see whats going on though

The AOD has a TV cable fro mthe motor that controls the shift points, and is kinda a PITA to adjust. Check the pan for metal filings or fragments when you change the fluid and filter. The fluid should be dark red, not brown or burnt-smelling. BTW, you have a Borg-Warner 13-56 transfer case.

the fluid is normal looking, it was just real thick and gooey like when i wiped it off the dipstick and i know thats not normal. i'm gonna take it in and let them change the fluid and filter and i'll see if they will chack that cable also. i do have one more question though, is there a name for the AOD like the C4, C5, and C6? or is it just called the AOD and is that a good trans. and trans. case that are on this bronco? thanks again.

The AOD is called the AOD, it's an overdrive tranny that Ford used for 3-4 years on the Bronco, It's not as durable as the C-6, in my opinion, but alot of guys still run them. you can get some upgrades for it, too. The B-W 13-56 is a good t-case, magnesium housing with about 2.72:1 low range. It has a tendency to wear out the oil pump mount on the inside of the housing, and if that happens the t-case will suddenly quit. Just keep plenty of fluid in it, as that seems to be the more common cause of failure- lack of fluid from a leaky seal.
