How much lift

I think I read somewhere that you measure from the top of the axel to the bottom of the frame to determine amount of lift kit. I think I understood it to be aprx. 7" was normal, and anything extra would be the lift. Is this correct? If so, the '73 rising rust measured 12.5 from the top of the back axel to the bottom of the frame. That would be more lift than I thought it had. Any of you guys know what is correct?

I think 7 1/2" would be close, but that is with the top on(glass in), and stock bumpers and doors in place.
