fuel leak

I have a 1989 Full size with the 302 in it and have a fuel leak about halfway down the drivers side. It is coming from a part that looks like a cannister of some type located just above the skid plate. It's not the fuel filter or pump. It has two lines running into it from the fuel tank and two coming out towards the engine. I went to the ford dealership and the parts guy had no clue what the part is or what it does. Does anybody know what this part is/how to fix it?

Please take a picture of it and post it.

The 1989 and earlier broncs had two fuel pumps, one in the tank, and on on the driver's side frame rail.

The fuel filter is also there, at least on the '90's and up, but I think for your year as well.

I'm not sure, I would have to look it up, but there may have been a small reservoir to hold fuel for when the bronco is in a steep incline.

Yes, there is a fuel reservoir canister, like an oil filter, inline between the gas tank and frame-mounted fuel pump on your 89 Bronco. IT has to do with regulating flow to the engine and return of unused fuel. I sold the one off my 88 Bronco, but it seems tht these are notorious for leaking. You might find one off a used Bronco, or one being parted out, that doesn't already leak. JSM84

The fuel reservoir makes sense. I'll get a picture up so someone else with the problem will know.

"Dual fuel pump systems must have a fuel accumulator between them. Fuel accumulators store fuel from the low pressure pump for the high-pressure pump. Storing fuel is a great idea for rock crawlers, as the accumulator holds a reserve of fuel, just in case gravity temporarily affects the gas tank. Accumulators also equalize fuel flow between the pumps. If one pump is pushing over 75GPH and the other is only flowing 50GPH, something has to give. Once the accumulator is full, excess fuel flows out to the return fuel line, and back to the tank. This keeps the low-pressure pump from stressing the high-pressure pump..."

The engine supply line feeds the high-pressure frame-mounted fuel pump, which goes to the in-line fuel filter, which then supplies the fuel rail.

I believe the dealer can get you a new seal; and I think it has plastic fuel line ports, so be careful when removing it.
