hey guys im having a problem with the starter grinding the flywheel but the starter engages like it should i can take it out and put it back in and the first start works fine then it grinds but the bolts arent striped but the motor came out of a 77 1/2 f150 but it was from another truck before could it be the motor was for a manual trany not an auto trany and it sounds like my torq conv is making a click like a spark plug is going but the flywheel and starter are new and i understand the starters arent allways good but it was perfect the first time and it will still engage like it should if i pull it out and put it back in.

Make sure you got the correct starter for the engine you have installed. There is a slight difference in the 302 and 351 starter that willcause the grinding due to a mismatch of the flywheel teeth to the starter gear.

I have heard that there is some sort of adapter you can get, but I don't know where. There was some mention of it about a week ago.

Good luck,

When I first bought my '78, the previous owner said there was a starter problem, he thought it might be a few teeth off the flywheel. I found that the prob. was with the dust shield....when I took the starter out and put it back in (a number of times) it would crank good the first time then grind and make weird sounds after that....what happened was that when previous owner had the starter changed, they bent the dust shield just enough to interfere with the starter install. I straightened it out with a hammer and a small grinder and have had NO more problems.
