its an air tube. the air from your smog pump goes through the valve and to the cat. it pumps fresh air to the cat which i believe helps heat the cat up because it works better at higher temps.

Exactly. The air pump sends additional air down to the cat to provide additional air to it will burn hotter. It's just like the old fireplace bellows. More air, more fuel, hotter temps, lower emissions. The airtube should be on the converter housing. It may be behind the converter itself but it IS on the housing. The only tube that should be coming off the exhaust runs to the airpump. The best way to go will be to repair it but if you can't right now you can always crimp-off the nub on the converter but try to do it right at the end so there's enough clean tubing left for a repair later on.

It should be on the passenger side mounted above the alternator, thats where mine was. Mine was also easy to take off becuase i have V-belts and it wasnt connected to the cat either. A PO must have replaced the cat on my truck, plus youll have to get a shorter serpentine belt or elimnator pulley to get ride of yours.

the air tube that goes to your cat will probably be aluminum and have a clamp holding it on. if it popped off you just put another clamp on. Mine came off at one point and i drilled a hole through it and ran a bolt that pulls the tube together from the inside. Hasnt popped off in over a year so i think its working:)

i noticed your sig said your in Chi. Do you have emissions inspections up there? Also visual vehicle inspections (even where emissions arent required) can include making sure all your emissions equipment is there. The smog pump doesnt really rob much power if any. The blades inside the pump are not aggressive so even at higher rpms your not creating much drag. Also the diverter valve typically only routes the air to your cat at idle and lower rpms when the exhaust temps are going to be lower.(i think)
