Getting very frustrated with my 72. I thought it was in good running order. Most the time I am just running little errands around town etc. But twice now when I have gone on a little longer drive. At some point...just when I am enjoying it. The engine just stalls. Kinda acts like I am running out of gas, but I am not. At first I thought it was just the aux tank but last night it happened on both tanks. Not something I want to have happen with my wife and two kids on board...which was the case. It also backfired once...which has never happened. But each time it does it, it eventually starts back up and I make it back home. I want to enjoy the experiance, but there has always been something to sour the occasion. Anyone out there have the same issues...any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Had the similar experience on mine and ended up the carb was worn out and needed rebuilding. Not sure what condition yours is in. The backfiring could be the ignition timing or you could have a vacuum leak at carb, intake, or vacuum hoses. How old are the distributor components? points out of adjustment? choke might need to be adjusted, have you changed fuel filter?

The P.O. had installed a new carb when I purchased. Is there a way to check for vacuum leaks or do you just replace hoses?? Not sure on the age of the other stuff. I did look at the fuel filters...they look clean?

"Getting very frustrated with my 72."

Come on now Karl.., half the fun with these rigs is "tinkering".! :D/

They are rugged yet, simple. A 40 yr. old "anything" is going to have issues needing attention. >:D< <'>

What you're describing comes up once every 8-10 posts. It's likely one of two possibilities, like 76 said.., fuel or electric.

My 1st. (partly due to the backfire) guess would be an ignition issue., a shorting/loose wire at the dizzy, coil, ballast resistor, or maybe even the key switch. (sometimes., the coil itself will break down, but rarely the prob.)

A fuel issue would likely stumble a bit B4 quitting.

You can check for leaks with a can of carb cleaner. With the engine running, spray around the suspect areas and listen for a surge. Spray in little short bursts.
