Whats the best way to degrease the engine and transmission for cleaning... I'd like to get all the old caked on crud off to pinpoint the leaks.

What's the best degreaser or cleaning method? I know I can't just take my pressure washer to it.... :p /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Ooops! Just before I did my snorkel I took my truck out to one of those DIY carwashes. Popped open the hood and hosed her engine down. I brought a can of WD 40 in case the wires and cap got wet (imagine that!) and she wouldn't start. Well she started right up, and I drove her home.

Maybe its not the best way, but it worked for me. If there is a better way, I'm certainly open to suggestions, and am pretty much always willing to learn.

i think if its bad just get some old clothes on and get under there with some dish soap and a green rough pad and a chisel and put soap on rub it in and chisel that shit off. i think that should work...

I always used Junk. Spray it on and let it soak for awhile and it does wonders with the grim.

LOL... don't you mean Gunk Engine Cleaner and Degreaser?

Yeah... I've used Gunk also, it is a wonderful product.

Still smiling...

I think if you have some grease, the DIY carwash is ok if you are careful.

I have a LARGE amount of grease, dirt, and whatever else caked all over. I will try the GUNK.

I wish I could find someone with a pressure steam cleaner... I bet that would work pretty well.

The Gunk does work well... even better if you can spray it on, and then smear it around a bit with a stiff bristeled brush, especially where the grease is thick.

I've heard that Coke (soda-pop) is good for engine degreasing. Someone told me that you can pour it on your engine and let it soak for a while then steam clean it and the grease comes right off. I've never tried this particular course of action nor do I even know if it works. Personally, I'd rather drink my coke and possibly mix it with a little bit of **** then have 12 beers.

I'd use the Gunk product as mentioned above.

Soak the warm engine before you go to the DIY wash then use there washer to blast it off.

If you are afraid the truck won't start, you could always leave it running when you do this...

The coke thing should work depending how bad it is. They tested that on myth busters and it did work. Just my 2cents.

take some plastic shopping bags, cover the distributer, starter solinoid and starter if possible

also keep the water away from the top of the carb

simplegreen the undercarriage and the sides of the block and engine compartment and let it soak for a bit before spraying

if you take it to a DIY carwash be careful, its a pretty hefty fine if you get caught

Very true... and most places have it posted to NOT do it. SO why do they have the 'engine' cleaner setting on a lot of them?

I personally picked up some engine degreaser from advance auto parts. It was like two bucks. Some areas (states) prohibit this...but it works magic. You spray it on there...let it foam up...you don't even need to scrub.

It's not great for the environment...if that is a concern for you. Anyways I love the stuff.

Good luck.

PS The stuff I bought was the house brand (made by Advance)

Thought I'd add a link to something I found (even though this thread is a bit old). Engine Cleaning
