So im closing in on 100k miles in my 92'. What is some stuff I should plan on doing to tune it up? The truck has been running differently, like loss of power, lower MPG, also i have noticed that since I had my tranny rebuilt its been acting up, like downshifting into 1st is rough, and shifting form 3 to 4th (i think) is not right its almost like its having trouble shifting. I took the truck back to the place i had rebuild my transmission and i told them to take a look at it and they said that when they rebuilt it the upgraded it to be stronger, so im thinking that might have something to do with it. Im hoping that when have the computer updated it will fix this trans problem. Just wanna see what you all think.

Give her a tuneup.

Plugs, rotor, cap, and air filter.

IF finances are ok... change the wires too. If not, you can check them.

Spay them with a mist of water from a spray bottle and see if the engine starts to miss or run rough. If so... change the wires.

that in and of itself may be enough to restore power and fuel mileage.

IT would also be a good time to check for any codes. The check engine light doesn't always come on.

Here is a good instructional on how to check for codes... it does not require any specialized equipment.

http://www.fordfuelinjection.com/files/self_test.pdf

This will be of particular interest to those with 1984 through 1988 models, but is also excellent for those up to the 1995 models.

BTW... your transmission is electronically controlled by your computer based upon the information it gets from various sensors. If it is not shifting properly, it is quite possible that one or more of your sensors are malfuntioning. As a side note: my TPS was malfunctioning and my CEL did NOT come on. I checked codes because my trans was going into overdrive too soon, and staying in OD too long. I got a TPS code, and I replaced my TPS. It is now running like a new truck again.

what kind of plugs/wires should i go with? also i cant seem to view that link...
That site was down for a couple of days, and is back up.

The file is in adobe acrobat format, and if you don't have the reader installed on your computer you can get a reader for free from. Just download it and install it.

http://www.adobe.com

adobe acrobat is the defacto standard and it is safe to use their product.

I would go with MSD cap/rotor and Blaster 2 coil. MSD also makes a nice spark plug wire, or you can go with ACCEL for some nice ones that are a little cheaper. As for spark plugs id just get a good name brand. You can get all of this at Checker Auto.

As for your trans, sounds to me like they put a shift kit in it. They firm up the shifts and quicken them, some kits more then others. You either like it or hate it, i dont mind shift kits im actulley thinkin about gettin for my truck.

Since the E4OD had been introduced, (I think in the late '80s) I believe that some of the internal components have been improved. I suspect that these components are the ones that the rebuilder is referring to.

I'm thinking shift kits are about $1200 and would be considered modifications, not a part of a typical rebuild. I may be completely off base here, so please allow me to append the previous statement with a reiterance of the fact that I really don't have any knowledge about automatic transmissions. So if I am corrected here, I would take no offense.

Most expencive shift kit ive seen was 70 bucks from B&M. All they do is reroute the fluid in valve body, they give you solid, quicker and firmer shifts. They also get rid of slip in the trans to improve MPG. Im not a auto trans master but i do have *somewhat* of an understanding for how they work. Most of the time when they go out its because the forward clutches started slippin way to much and burned everything up, shift kit also helps to prevent that. Also, most kits come with 2 options a "RV/Heavy Duty" option or a "Compition" option. RV give you quicker more firm solid shifts instead of long sloppy and slow stock style. Comp does the same thing just faster and harder.

So there you go... I really didn't know what I was talking about. :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

I had a concern about the shift points on my E4OD and I was looking at stuff that would allow modification of, and reprogramming of the computer that controls the shift points. But here I don't know what I am talking about, cause I didn't fully understand it when I was reading it. I think they were between $900 and $1200 when one adds up the costs of the various parts.

At any rate, thanks for setting the record straight. If a shift kit is less than a hundred bucks, then it is certainly reasonable that a rebuilder *may* have put one in.

The only reason i think that they might have put one in, is some trans rebuild kits ive looked at come with a shift kit. I thought about ordering one and trying to rebuild my C6 myself. But then it dawned on me that yea, i can take it apart and put it back together....but will it work right? :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> im just gonna do a shift kit and fuild flush.
