I'm not sure, if the original ammeter ever worked. A few years ago, I installed a one wire alternator, and now I'm not using the original factory voltage regulator. I had a below the dash, Intellitronix DC voltmeter. However, the lens popped off from releasing the emergency brake. I have watched YouTube videos, about changing the ammeter to a voltmeter; so, I tried it. I bought a small DC voltmeter from Amazon, and I have installed it. This voltmeter, fit when the plastic was slightly enlarged. I used a plastic tie, in the unused ammeter holes, to keep the printed circuit board in place. This is the Amazon DC voltmeter: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08N45HMCJ?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_6
