California Smog Check

Since last year, California requires smog checks forever on vehicles built in 1976 model year and later. Has anybody had a problem passing? How about registering an out-of-state?

Hi Here in south eastern Wisconsin we have smog checks too ours only go back 25 years. Alot of guys register their stuff up north or in another county to avoid checks. They get collector plates so they only need to pass once. with these plates you can't drive for the mouth of January. Our testers don't look over the car, don't open the hood. They even have problems driving stick. It's just another thing that we put up with. Good Luck SAYBYE

Hi Oceanside-

All I can say is the DMV in California has it all figured out. There is not very many ways to get around it.

The out-of-state thing will not work because you have a CDL(calif.drivers lisc.) If you came from out of state you would only have a small grace period before California would be in your pockets. You could try to register it in another county that does not have smog laws, like Impeial county down by the salton sea. But you would have to prove that you have a residence there and a PO Box will not get it. They will also require some kind of utility bill as proof! Keep the smog crap on your bronco it ll be a lot less hassel.

I own a 75 calif. smog equiped bronco and went to a smog place and asked about the smog stuff. Because mine is a 75 I can take the stuff off an do anything I wish.

I live in Valley Center so I'm not far from you. Is your bronco runnig?

I am still looking for my first Bronco. By an out-of-state, I meant bringing one in from the other 49. I believe you would need the 49-state (Federal) equipment that came from the factory, but it needs to meet California's emissions. I was wonderiing if an engine in good condition and tune can pass.

I might just restrict my looking to '75 and older.

I live in Santa Rosa and if you find a way around the somg check please let everyone know. I would just tune and **** put high OCT. in it and pray you never know she mite just surprize you

I'm in vacaville, My parents have a ranch in Mendo. county up north.....No smog.....Dads '78 flat bed, 88 F-150, '92 toyota pick-up........

NO SMOG..... Get a P.O. BOX up their somewhere in the southern part of the county so you don't have to drive so far to check the P.O. box say.......Ukiah.....and make it happen

I know a couple guys that register there J**ps in Utah because of the smog laws. If you have a relative in another state you can have the registration done their, but you could get in trouble if you get pulled over having another states plates on your car living here. I think the grace period in only 10-14 days to change plates and if you drive in around town and the same cops see you all the time you will get pulled over and have to either register it in CA ($!!!), or send it to its registration state. Personally I would just leave all the smog stuff on, or sell it and buy a pre-1975.

I was reading where car builders were getting popped (Boyd, Chip) because they were finding per-1975 VIN's and building new frame-up Hot Rods with new bodies and motors and getting around the smog laws because of the VIN. You can do it, but I would imagine you will get caught. My one buddy has a built tube frame J**p that he went way over board with the motor and has a 1950's Willy's VIN. He knows it is only a mater of time before he gets popped.
