Not sure what's broken but I can pull the gear lever down from Park to any position without the key in the ignition or my foot on the brake. My quess is something is broken. Advance Auto Parts guy says it sounds like the neutral safety switch is bad. If that were bad then it would start in gear but it doesn't. Dunno if the switch controls anything else though. I'm thinking not the switch but maybe some sort of Brake/Shifte Interlock mechanism. Anyone know for sure? Switch cost $50 and works cause I can't start in gear, only in Park or Neutral.

Well, nobody else has ventured a guess on this one so I guess I'll throw in my $.02

I'm not thinking the neutral safety switch has jack to do with this, that one's an electrical interlock that does just what you think it does (keeps you from starting it in drive or reverse by only allowing a start condition when you're in park or neutral) what you're discribing sounds like something mechanical in the column. I'll tell you right now I've never had the problem so I'm just shooting from the hip but I'd take off the trim pieces to get a good look at the mechanism and follow it back. Clearly there's a mechanical lockout in there and presumably it's now broken. Get in there to see how the mechanism actuates, follow the movement and see if you can locate the lockout. Sorry I don't have more than that to offer.

The E4OD you have in your ride only has one cable going to the trans. I am in agreement that the switch is not your problem and it is in the column/pedal area. As stated above, check for an interlock mechanism in the column, maybe a schematic shows something... Good luck.
