i just finally got my 86 back on the road. its been sitting in my back yard for 3 years waiting on money to replace the trans. well finally its done. i was able to drive the truck today for the first time in over three years. i was amazed at how well it behaved. it started right up and ran pretty well for sitting for so long.

ok so now for the question.... is there anything special i should do considering its been sitting so long? as far as additives i might put in the motor or suspension issues i should look for. i did put fresh gas in it. i'll be changing the oil tomorrow. i plan on new plugs and wires in the next week or so. does anybody have any opinions on that silver can of engine restore stuff that you put in when you change the oil? i've heard both good and bad things about it.

thanks for your time and thoughts

Definitely want to change the oil, as it will leave bad residues after sitting for a long time. Change ALL the fluids: brake fluid, as it will collect moisture and go bad; coolant, use 50/50 antifreeze/water, so your engine doesn't crack the block when it freezes outside; tranny and t-case fluid, use Ford auto tranny fluid; fresh gear oil in the axles; and finally inspect and re-pack the wheel bearing, as grease gets old it can harden. Change the belts and coolant hoses if you think they're bad, i.e., cracked or dry-rotted. Check the brake pads and inspect the lines for any leaks. Last, look around for any critters that have made the Bronco their new home, JSM84

ok i was planning on doing most of that but i didnt even think about the critter thing and the brake fluid. i think the most anoying thing is that the gas pedal is extreamly stiff. its either all the way or nothing. is that common on broncos or is there something i can lubricate to make it smoother. i had an 88 a few years ago but i dont remember the gas pedal being so stiff.

I'd maybe try spraying a few shots of white lithium grease on the cable where it goes into the outer plastic covering as well as the spring. Probably just stiff & coated with junk after sitting so long. Try to work the grease up into the protective plastic & it should loosen up.

I would also suggest a cap and rotor change on the distributor and possibly a coil change. When I bought my 92 XLT, I was told it had sat for a year before I bought it and a stutter lead me to change those and there were cobwebs in the distributor housing and upon trying to take the power wires off the coil, the case cracked and the positive terminal came off in my hand.
