I have a 1990 Bronco with a 302 and an AOD transmission. I have a chance to pick-up a rebuilt AOD-E/4R70W out of a 1995 ford pick-up that also has a 302. I have researched it and it appears to be the same transmission only better. Does anyone know if this will work in my Bronco?

The short answer is no, it won't work. The AOD is a flat-out mechanical overdrive tranny, it has a lot of the C6 in it. The AOD-E, E4OD & 4R70W are all electronically controlled. The shiftpoints are determined & controlled by the processor. In order to make an AOD-E work in your 90' you'd need to transfer the 95 processor & all it's sensors. You *can* do it but in all honesty it would probably be easier to just swap the entire engine/tranny/processor package. The only alternative would be to use a stand-alone tranmission controller. Baumann Engineering is the only vendor I know of making these. The AOD-E/4R70W trannys are good, it's just that you need the processor to control them. Physically it's a bolt in, you should be able to use your existing crossmember and driveshafts. You'll have to decide if you want the entire engine/tranny/processor/sensor package or the Baumann stand-alone if this is a swap you *really* want to accomplish. Here's the info from Baumann if you want to ck it out: http://www.baumannengineering.com/tcs.htm

If you DO go thru with the swap try to get access to the donor truck. I've never done a swap like this myself so I'm just giving general recommendations, but it's ALWAYS best to have access to the donor. You may well wind up needing the crossmember or some sort of rinky-**** bracket or linkage. Having the donor vehicle *right there* to pull parts from and to look at as a refrence can be invaluable.

Let us know if you do the swap, I'd be very interested in hearing about the specifics of how it went.

Thanks for the information BroncoBill. You saved me a couple dollars and some headaches. It sounds a little above my skill level. (which doesn't take much).
