I just bought a 78 Bronco and im not to firmilar with the drivetrain. I know that I have a forn 9" rear and a dana 44 front. My quiestion is, is there anyway to know what sline axles are in the rear without taking it apart? What was common for these trucks? Thanks

Well, they're either 28 or 31 spline. Now you can start searching the more esoteric 9" sites for clues such as axles tags, tube diameters & weld placements or you can grab a slide-hammer & a piece of chalk. I think that's about the best wisdom anyone will have to offer. (one quick clue, if you have the small bolts on the bearing retainer it's probably a 28 spline shaft, big-bolt retainers were usually 31 spline jobs)

Thanks for the help guys. I have another question for you guys. Have any of you all put 3/4 ton springs on a bornco. I have found a F-250 donor truck if the parts will work. I want to use the rear leaf springs and the front coil springs. Has anyone tried this? Will it work? Also if anyone knows of a place to get a complete foont bussing kit please let me know. Thanke Lil Red

For sure, the 78/79 Bronco rear axle is a Ford 9" with 31-spline shafts. As for swapping to F-250 springs, it can be done but will stiffen the ride some. Check with Jeff's Bronco Graveyard for any bushings or other parts for your rig, and welcome to Bronco Zone!!! JSM84

other than stiffening the ride up do you think that the rear springs will just bolt up in place if the original rear leaf springs.

Yes, if they are the same length as the ones you have now. the Ford leafs are 3" wide for any of the F-series and big broncos.
