I have a 95 full size with a 302. I recenly changed my oil pump and had to pull my distributor and i lost my timing. I then found out later that on the balancer there is not any timing stamps or degrees. So I went to autozone and bought timing tape but i have no base to put it on. There isn't anymarking on the balancer except for a keyway looking slot. Is that my 0 or is it 10btdc? Any help would be great. Also i know 10degree btc is stock but anybody have any other degree that inproves preformance i would love to hear it.

What you need to do is bring the motor to top dead center compression stroke . I usually take out number 1 plug ( Front passengers side ) and bump the motor over with no plug in it ( coil unplugged ) and finger close to the spark plug hole when you feel air start pushing out of it I stop and get a big ratchet with a 15/16 socket and turn the cranckshaft in the direction it was rotating slowly with a screwdriver in the plug hole so you can feel the piston moving up once it hits top it will stop moving for a little bit of rotation this is where you want to stop . Now if you were to pull the harmonic balancer off the keyway should be pointed directly up this is TDC and is where youd want to put your tape with the 0 by the pointer . Also remember that after you set your static timing ( mechanical timing ) you must remove the spout connector before trying to time it while running . The spout connector is a small jumper plug located by the distributor harness just pull the cap off . Now you can set your 10 deg BTDC if thats what you want . Lock everything down and check with timing light again now plug in the spout connector and check again youll see its moving around . What your seeing is the EEC taking control of the timing . This is why you must remove the spout connector before trying to time the engine while running . :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />
