I drive an '88 Bronco and am having problems with the steering. First of all, I get this wierd whining sound whenever I'm driving. I was reading another forum that stated that the driver of another '88 replaced the stock steering pump with a Saginaw Super Steering Pump. This apparently not only ended the whining, but also allowed them to steer easier with larger tires. I have normal tires at this point, so that's not the issue. The whining is. The other issue is that the power steering is more like rack and pinion. The steering wheel is loose for all of an inch either way, then is like a rock. I have to hang on the wheel to make even a wide turn. I took it to my trusted mechanic (and I do trust him he's my neighbor) and he said that the pump had burned out. He replaced it, and I'm still having the same problem. I'm beginning to think that even if I do get the "Super Pump" that it may not fix the hardness of the steering. Is this a pump issue or some other aspect of the steering that needs to be looked at closer?

Also, does anyone know if it is worth tracking down a "Super Pump" and replacing the stock pump? Other than getting rid of that whine (which may be worth it)?

It should be stated that this was my daily driver, until gas prices went through the roof and now its more of a toy. It's primary use is for shuttling Boy Scouts to the woods, which it does wonderfully, but that is only once a month. I'm getting back into fixing and upgrading now that I moved to a target rich off roading environment, but I want to fix this steering issue before anything else. With it sitting for such long periods, could it be that something rusted over and needs greasing? Has anyone had this problem or am I the first?

The pump may be good, but it sounds like the steering box is shot. No rack and pinion. The steering shouldn't have that much play nor be that hard to steer. The pump is whining because it is working harder. I'd suggest replacing the steering box.

The Saginaw pump is better/stronger and won't wine. I was able to get a rebuilt from NAPA. Many go to the wrecking yard and pull one to save cash. Sorry been some time since I did that upgrade so I don't have part numbers nor years of vehicle to pull one from. someone else should chime in.

I'm with SWAT. Sounds like your steering box may be shot. The play is not completely unheard of and can be adjusted by adjusting the steering lash on the box, ask your next door neighbor to show you the lash adjustment. It's usually an external nut you loosen then tighten the ***** type head inside of it. The rule is quarter turns only, then test and repeat if needed. At least that's what I have been told.

I would try that for the play, the pump is new so it shouldn't be an issue but if it's hard to turn then I would say the gear box needs to be replaced.
