83 ignition problem

hi, i'm new.

i'm going crazy!!! i have an 83 bronco with a 460. i just put the motor in last week and it was having problems firing but it finally did. later in the week, one of the rockers was f-d up and i bent a pushrod and lost a lifter. i took the top end off the motor and fixed it. it's all back together now and won't fire. i replaced the coil, ignition box, distributer, solonoid, and rewired the entire wiring harness from the firewall foreward. i even went as far as taking a GM ignition module and bypassing all of the cluster f- of a wiring harness. it still has no fire! any ideas?

this may sound dumb but is the timing right, the distributor incorrectly , TDC

Are you using the Duraspark II ignition from the Bronco? If so, here is a trouble shooting proceedure.

yes, i think it is the duraspark II so that may help. the distributer is right and that's not the problem anyways because i'm not getting spark to the coil. the distributer has nothing to do with it.

yes, but a brand new distributor and a brand new pickup did not solve my problem. it was somewhere in the wiring harness. i never pinpointed it so i taped it all up and stuffed it in the corner. i now have a points system and haven't had a problem since.

Glad you found a solution /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> . Just curious, why didn't you go with something like a MSD and use the new distributor you bought instead of points?

i went with the points because i couldn't find the short and i needed it to drive asap. and i was short on cash. but i have a new problem...i seem to keep bending pushrods and the fulcrums that hold the rocker arms down keep wearing out. i have taken the intake off twice in my school parking lot to fish out lifters and bent pushrods. i finally replaced all of the rockers thinking that they were just worn out because they were used. well, 2 days later the same thing happened only worse! a pushrod has somehow vanished and all the rockers are loose. I'm completely lost because when i rebuilt the motor less than two weeks ago i put a new cam and lifters in. i had a set of used pushrods and rocker assemblies. but then i replaced the rockers. the only thing i can think of is that the pushrods could be the wrong size. did they make different size pushrods for early '70's 460's? my mind is fried @-)
